Romelu Lukaku hit out at Inter Milan’s defending after they held on to secure a 4-3 Serie A win against Sassuolo on Sunday.
The Belgium international bagged a brace at the Mapei Stadium, while Lautaro Martinez also chipped in with two goals as Inter were cruising at 4-1 with 16 minutes remaining.
However, goals from Filip Djuricic and Jeremie Boga in the space of seven minutes left Inter holding on in the closing stages to secure the three points.
Lukaku suggested that Inter should have scored more goals when they were dominating proceedings and then lamented the defensive play late on which almost proved costly.
The 26-year-old summer signing from Manchester United told DAZN: “Once it goes to 3-1 and 4-1, it ought to be over.
“The positive we take is that we got the three points, but we need to defend better than that. I try to help the team throughout the game and am happy for the side, because it was very important to get this win.”
Lukaku also revealed that he celebrated his goals with coach Antonio Conte because he wants to “celebrate with everyone”, while he insisted that he is fully focused on giving his best for the team in every game.
The win leaves Inter second in the Serie A table with seven wins from eight games played and just one point behind leaders and reigning champions Juventus.
The Nerazzurri switch their focus to the Champions League in midweek when they host Borussia Dortmund at the San Siro.
