Former FIFA and CAF instructor Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has disclosed that Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman’s African Player of the Year award was based on merit.
Lookman was the biggest winner at a star-studded 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, as Africa’s best performers for the year were honored.
Lookman was named CAF Men’s Player of the Year after a sensational 12 months with Italian side Atalanta, and Nigeria’s Super Eagles follow in the footsteps of compatriot Victor Osimhen, who claimed the award in 2023.

Speaking with Completesports.com, Onigbinde, who congratulated the Nigerian international, stated that the Atalanta star won the award based on merit.
“As a Nigerian, I am proud of Ademola Lookman’s achievement because winning the African Player of the Year is not an easy feat.
He truly deserved the award based on what he has done for the Super Eagles and Atalanta as well. He practically won the award based on merit, and there was no controversy to it.
“I hope he builds on this and continues to bang in the goals in Europe and for Nigeria.”
