Anthony Gordon believes Alexander Isak is the best striker in Europe after scoring in Newcastle United’s 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final, first-leg victory over Arsenal.
Isak has scored 14 goals in his last 15 Newcastle games across all competitions to move Eddie Howe’s side a huge step closer to reaching the final for a second time in three seasons.
And according to Opta, only Erling Haaland (105) and Mohamed Salah (73) have scored more goals in all competitions among Premier League players than Isak’s 50 goals since making his Newcastle debut in August 2022.
When asked about Isak, Gordon told BBC Radio 5 Live (via EuroSport): “Very good. He is the best in Europe, probably right now, with the form he’s in.
“The best quality he’s got is that he’s so humble.
“He is not scared to pass the ball. He’s very unselfish, and his best ability is his raw ability on the ball.”
Isak also played a telling role in Newcastle’s second goal after David Raya parried his initial effort into the path of Gordon to slot home the rebound.
Gordon admits that Newcastle rode their luck at times, with Gabriel Martinelli rattling a post in the first half, while Jurrien Timber, William Saliba and Kai Havertz also missed headed chances in the 2-0 win for the visitors.
“Everyone to a man was top-level,” Gordon added.
“Coming to this place is so hard and they defend really well. It was always going to be a smash-and-grab kind of game for us, but we executed it perfectly.
“We are a team and that’s when we play at our best, when everyone’s on the same page.
“We have to be that ruthless with and without the ball – all the top teams do it.”
