Real Madrid have announced that midfielder Toni Kroos has signed a one-year contract extension until the summer of 2023. The 29-year-old Germany international has been with Los Blancos for five seasons after signing from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the summer of 2014.

The former Bayer Leverkusen loan star has made 233 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals but was one of the players thought to be heading for the exit door this summer. Real coach Zinedine Zidane is set for a clear-out to try to rebuild and close the gap to Barcelona, with Gareth Bale almost certain to be jettisoned.
Many felt Kroos would follow suit at some stage in the off-season but he has put pen to paper on a new contract until June 2023. Kroos has played his part in Real winning 11 trophies during his stay, including three consecutive Champions League triumphs, and he will hope they can return to winning ways next term.
