British stars Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie are one win away from the main draw at the China Open after winning in qualifying on Saturday. Evans, the British number two, beat China’s Jie Cui 6-3 6-1 and now goes up against 29-year-old Canadian Vasek Pospisil in his final qualifier.
Norrie lost just three game in his 6-2 6-1 triumph over 25-year-old Chinese player He Yecong and will square off with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s world number 93 Damir Dzumhur to make the main draw. Should the duo make it through, it will mean there are three Brits in the first round proper as Andy Murray has made the trip and faces Italy’s Matteo Berrettini.

The news was not so good for Heather Watson, however, as the Guernsey-born star lost in the first round of qualifying to Poland’s Magda Linette. Watson, who almost beat Serena Williams at Wimbledon a few years ago, is now ranked 125th in the world and has struggled for a few seasons. Pablo Cuevas will face Dominik Koepfer, while Bernard Tomic takes on Jeremy Chardy in the other final qualifiers.
