Victor Boniface has said he will pick himself ahead of Super Eagles teammate Ademola Lookman for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award.
In an interview on Sporty TV, Boniface said judging by what the both of them achieved last season, he will pick himself.
“It’s probably between me and Lookman,” he replied when asked who the favourites for the award are. “And I will go for myself because I rate myself that high.
“If it is about what we did last season I will pick myself.”
Boniface played a key role for Bayer Leverkusen scoring 21 goals in all competitions last season, as they secured a first-ever Bundesliga title and also landed the DFB-Pokal.
Despite suffering an injury in January, Boniface recovered in time to help Leverkusen end the campaign on a high.
For Lookman, he was instrumental for Atalanta as his hat-trick in the Europa League final earned the Serie A club a 3-0 win against Leverkusen.
Lookman also helped them reach the final of the Coppa Italia where they lost 1-0 to Juventus.
He was impressive for the Super Eagles as they went all the way to the AFCON 2023 final with the forward scoring three goals.
Lookman’s performance saw him make the AFCON 2023 Team of the Tournament.
He is the only African player that made the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Balon d’Or award.
Also, the former Everton and Leicester player has scored two goals in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

Maybe next time not this year.
Boniface will struggle to make the top 3 this year. He hasn’t done anything in the SuperEagles color and he lost the Europa League to Lookman. It’s between Lookman and Brahim Diaz, but Lookman all the way.
