Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has declared that Super Eagles skipper Ahmed Musa ranks among Nigeria’s greatest strikers to ever dorn the green and white jersey.
Musa recently signed a two-year deal with Turkish Super Lig side Fatih Karagumruk ending his short stint with Nigerian Professional Football League side Kano Pillars.
The 28-year old who has been a free agent since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr last season has been eager to return to European football ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers and Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon early next year.
Speaking in a chat with Complete Sports, Ikpeba hails Musa’s new move adding that the former CSKA Moscow forward remains one of Eagles greatest strikers of all time for scoring four goals at the World Cup.
“It is good that Musa has finally secured a new club in Europe which fits his status as Super Eagles captain,” begins Ikpeba who starred for Monaco in his hey days.

“I think the move to Turkey is coming at a very good time for him ahead of next season and with the World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON finals coming up.
“Ahmed Musa has come of age in the Eagles and I ranked him among the greatest Nigerian strikers till date for scoring four goals for Nigeria in two World Cup outings.
“The goals were quality strikes too, you know. They were technically solid goals scored against top teams and at the biggest football event in the world.
“That is no mean feat because it is a record which other Nigerian strikers will be striving to break in the future,” said Ikpeba who himself scored a goal for Nigeria at the France ’98 World Cup.
It would be recalled that Musa scored twice for Nigeria at the 2014 and 2018 World Cup tournaments to become the country’s top World Cup goalscorer.
Musa is currently Nigeria’s third most-capped player with 98 appearances behind Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama with 101 and 100 caps respectively.

Him play Monaco or Dortmond abi? He win Africa footballer of the year like you abi? Ndi uwa
Celebration of midiocrity
@Chibuike
Amokachi and Siasia play Monaco and Dortmund too abi…..maybe Aiyegbeni and Martins win African footballer of the year too. Anybody wey nor play Monaco or win AFOTY nor be great player….LMAOOo
@ Akp
Even FIFA too is celebrating and will keep celebrating the “mediocrity” of Musa’s 4 world cup goals despite being a winger. Tell your superstars to also score 4 world cup goals or more if it is easy and their own “mediocrity” too will be celebrated. But till then, we will continue to celebrate the mediocrity of 4 world cup goals with 3 of the 4 getting nominations for 10 top in their respective tournaments.
Hahahaaha…bad belle people truly full everywhere.
@ drey I am not arguing with ikpeba’s statement…..Armed been the best a country has ever produced only tells you that such country is midiocre….. It baffles me when even you too will sit in front of your TV watching such country play football and expecting them to perform miracles….Even if Guadiola himself is coach can such country ever smell the quarter finals of a senior world cup?
…@Dr.Drey… Are you meaning to tell us that one in the capacity of Victor Ikpeba does not know the difference between a winger and a forward to call Musa Ahmed a striker… you continue to specifically call Musa a winger, to remove scrutiny from his return of a paltry 15goals in 96- international games for Super Eagles… but Ikpeba in his assertion has also told you Musa is essentially a striker too… You see, this is where some of us lie in wait for you because it’s clear you only like to pick and choose what you like to argue in favour of… Ikpeba said: Musa is one of the best strikers to ever play Super Eagles… based on his stats, but you want us to not judge Musa more in the light of a striker but rather as a winger… he has scored 4world-cup-goals and so yes he is a good striker… a striker is one expected with more probably to score goals because defenders and midfielders score goals also… So is Musa a forward? Yes… Musa is emphatically a forward… and yes he has been the most profllific Nigeria in our world cup participation… We are happy he has moved to Turkey even though it’s far off the scale regarding Top 5 league consideration… however, it must be sounded that history belongs in the past… Thomas Mueller has about 10world cup goals and is still active as a player till date, he was seen to be past his useful days and left out of his national team from post world cup 2018 up until recently when he would be recalled back to his national team for Euro 2020… a case that was overwhelmingly backed by the majority of the German football public… this was however unpopular with the Coach Joachim Loew who maintained Thomas Mueller has outlived his usefulness and efficiency to the national team… he was included in the squad, went to the recently concluded Euros but was a shadow of how efficient he use to be… a feeling that was resounded again with an embarrassing miss having the English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at his mercy in a chance that would have leveled up proceedings for Germany against the English… he exited Euro 2020 with his head hanging low… his continued involvement with the German national may have been over yet again if Joachim Loew Continued but perhaps with Hansi Flick… Thomas Mueller could get his shit back together again atleast for Germany… and he is rightly only 31yrs of age. Moral of the Story… If Thomas Mueller could be put on a scale despite having and impressive haul of ten(10) world cup goals… why then must we continue to worship an Ahmed Musa who in reality may not be less than 35yrs… recently performed the worst (4/10) against Cameroon and if not for the recent Turkey move… most, me included he is over the hill and should hand over the baton… well, we won’t put the final squeeze on Musa Ahmed just yet and so, we will be patient again and allow him to write a new story in Turkey to continue with Super Eagles and the budding young talents sprouting everywhere for us and begging for inclusion…
…actually it’s 15goals in 98 international games for Ahmed Musa… correction to that error in my writeup above…
The best strikers Nigeria has ever produced in the last 30 years(which is the farthest my memory of Nigerian football can take me) is as follows accordingly
1)Rashidi Yekini
2)Victor Ikpeba
3)Nwankwo Kanu
The best wingers Nigeria has ever produced both left and right accordingly
1) Emmanuel Amunike
2)Finidi George
3)Victor Moses
In the two categories Armed Musa does not even smell the list….. scoring world cup goals doesn’t make you the best,…. you people should stop insulting Nigeria abeg…..these players I listed above have pedigree…..they either won the Africa footballer of the year, played at the highest level of club football or where recognized by world class coaches and administrators. Please you people should stop this new low you are dragging our football to….. Nigerian football has not done anything wrong to deserve all this insults.
Hahahaha…scoring world cup goals (goals that earn nominations in top goals scored at the respective world cups) doesn’t make you the best winger…LMAO. I guess having the record number of goal contributions per games played for the Super Eagles as a winger too doesn’t make you the best…LMAO. Pls argue with Ikpeba, FIFA and the record books.
@Akp. If scoring WorldCup goals doesn’t make you one of the best or the best why do Ghana still worship Asamoah Gyan? And why do the world still revel in the exploits of Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Gerd Muller, Zico, Socrates, Careca, Romario, Ronaldo De Lima, Micheal Owen and the likes? Because they all made an impact at the WorldCup. The FIFA WorldCup is the highest level of any sporting event and Musa has made an impact at that level. I will put him ahead of Moses based on that fact. And Musa is way more patriotic to the course than all the wingers you listed. When it comes to wearing the green white green of Nigeria with pride Musa stands above them all. Therefore, if he commands regular playing time in the Turkish league which is in the top 15 of UEFA coefficient he will still be relevant for these set of SuperEagles going into the WorldCup qualifiers, AFCON and possibly the WorldCup itself if we qualify.
@Ayphillydegreat… hahahaha. So Turkish league that is Top 15 on EUFA league ranking now don follow because Musa just upgrade from NPFL
to Ottoman league… hahahahahaha. When we tell una make una the easy shout top 5 league… una no hear the castigate players like Olayinka say who him go bench? As Mallam Musa don go for ottoman challenge now… folks like you wey be Top 5 league towncrier don change music now to top 15 league… When we say folks here na masters of applying double standards una the feel say we just the yab… It’s getting really interesting here! Lol…
Please I need you to post where I’ve said top 5 leagues in Europe is the only place we should call our players from. Please provide me with where I’ve said top 5 leagues is where all our players must be playing. And please also provide me with post where I condemn Olayinka for playing for Slavia Prague. Of course it is an added advantage for a player in the top 5 leagues as they should always be considered on merit however, As long as you’re playing and commanding regular playing time in main stream Europe you stand a chance with the SuperEagles. Musa has played in a top 5 league in the past. He has featured in the UCL regularly with CSKA Moscow in the past. Therefore, moving to the Turkish league at this point is a good move with his experience. At least playing in Turkey is better than been stuck in the Mediterranean leagues of Egypt and Tunisia for over 5 years. And it’s better than your plentifools talents in the NPFL Lmao!!
Hahahaha… You have to pull an Ajayi on me with the line you and Drey like to use… Stuck in the Mediterranean league… Lol. I give you that one… Peace!
Chat me on WhatsApp to get game for pay after win. Our games usually come on weekend like this. Friday’s and yesterday’s games were won, evidence are available. Our source is reliable. This is no scam as a trial will definitely convince you. 09090498231
We should please save ourselves the argument. If Musa goes on to perform exceptionally well in his new club, there will certainly be no justification for not inviting him. But if on the contrary, his performances falls short, we must as a matter decency/integrity not invite him irrespective of how well he performed in previous world cups. Musa just have to use this opportunity to prove he still has it in him otherwise his recent performances for SE doesn’t merit further invitations.
Simple and short. LMAOoo. No mind them jare @ Glory. Let them continue to hate am man whom god has blessed.
Hahahaha….@jimmylie…who send you tales by moonlight about Thomas Muller…how does that concern us…? Nor be ordinary victor Moses you wan use captaincy beg make e come back to SE…??? So was Muller the reason why Germany was knocked out of the Euros…? Where were the other players in the team too…? If everyone had done their job 1 miss by Muller would have meant nothing…..and was that the only time Muller missed a goal all his career…??? NO, but because everyone else hadn’t lived up to the billing, Muller is now being scapegoated and given a bad name to kill him….LMAOOo. Germany can afford to throw away Thomas Muller for all I care, If we have anyone in our own SE half as good a Muller currently we would worship him….different strokes for different folks
Even a blind follower of Nigerian football knows Ahmed Musa has always been a winger and not a center forward. Yea they are all always listed as strikers, but we all know that Musa has never been our target man, neither has he ever led the lines for us. He has always operated from the wings like Segun Odegami, Finidi, Amuneke and Babangida and that is why he remains the best Winger Nigeria has produced since Segun odegbami. And if you choose to call them strikers to make yourself happy, then suit yourself. So tell us which one of Finidi, Amuneke or Babangida contributed as much as the PALTRY 15 goals and/or 15 assists playing from same position as Musa, or since you’ve chosen to factor the number of matches played ( majority of which he has always started from the bench, YES MUSA HASNT EVEN STARTED 40 out of the 98 matches he has played for the super eagles), how many of his fellow wingers had 1 goal contribution in every 3 games played ratio that Musa has despite operating from same positions as them……LMAOOooo. They should have also made same PALTRY contributions and also score the same 4 world cup goals MUSA has scored na…..LAMoo
But some tribal and religious bigots just hate him and NEVER want to see any good thing said or seen about him. In their desperation to water down his contributions to Nigerian football, they rather compare him and his goal returns with those of the likes of Amokachi and IK UChe who were out and out strikers rather than with those who operated from the wings like him….LMAOooo…because they know he towers over them. Evenone knows the propensity to score goals as a centre-forward or an out and out striker is way higher than when playing as a winger, yet Musa’s goal returns are even in the range of those of the out and out strikers who have played for the SE, yet, bigots are trying with maximum effort to convince themselves he has not offered anything to the SE and has only been making the sqaud on “free passes” for 10 solid years…..LMAOooo
Musa was rated 4/10 in the last friendly….by FIFA or by CAF…? What of Kelechi Iheanacho who also got similar ratings…? What of Onuachu who was even worse, together with Shehu, Collins and Moffi who all got similar ratings in a game where the overall ratings by the entire team was roughly 5/10…? Only 4 others rated above Musa…. LMAOOoo…..I guess the entire team should just be discarded since the overall perfomance wasnt a tad higher than your so called 4/10. And what of the friendly before that, did he also score 4/10..? What about the one against Tunisia where he created the most delightful assist we’ve seen in the SE in the last 2 years and also won a penalty which Iheanacho fluffed, did he also score 4/10 in those matches too…?
@Jimmylie….I dont need to repeat myself, I have told you before and will tell you again, till the day you will provide another winger with 1 goal contribution in every 3 matches for the SE, Ahmed Musa, the no 3 top scoring african in world cup history reamins the BEST WINGER THE SUPER EAGLES HAS PRODUCED SINCE SEGUN ODEGBAMI…..LMAOoo..no hatred can take that away…..argue with FIFA’s records books if e too pain you….LMAOOoo.
You NEVER wanted to acknowledged Musa as SE great, a LEGEND in person of Victor Ikpeba has flipped the table in your face now, even going one step further to not just calling Musa one of the greatest wingers, but one of the greatest STRIKERS altogether in the SE, going ahead to even compare him not just with his fellow wingers but also with Second Strikers and Centre- forwards, now you want to change the argument to semantics of ‘”striker” to save face….LMAOoo. That means I was even being conservative by only limiting Musa’s greatness to his fellow wingers, a legend of the game even rates him better, compare to the tribal and sectional bigots on this forum.
Once again, till you scan through your so-called factsbook and get another winger that will provide that PALTRY 15 goals and 15 assists in 98 games (with less than 40 starts) or average 1 goal contribution every 3 matches for the SE, AHMED MUSA REMAINS THE BEST SE WINGER SINCE SEGUN ODEGBAMI.
And incase you missed it; Now its Victor Ikpeba the Prince of Monaco speaking…
“””…Ahmed Musa has come of age in the Eagles and I rank him among the greatest Nigerian strikers till date for scoring four goals for Nigeria in two World Cup outings…..The goals were quality strikes too, you know. They were technically solid goals scored against top teams and at the biggest football event in the world….That is no mean feat because it is a record which other Nigerian strikers will be striving to break in the future, said Ikpeba who himself scored a goal for Nigeria at the France ’98 World Cup…..””
Oya carry ya keyboard on ya head and start arguing with Ikpeba too……LMAOOooo. Ikpeba has taken over from where I left….LMAOooo
Ikpeba did not say Musa was better than him… he said Musa is “one” of the best… again, there is a difference between centre forward and forward… a centre forward is marksman… number 9. A forward comprise centre forward, right winger and left winger, as well as the supporting striker in a 442…@Dr.Drey… now I see why you hero-worship Ahmed Musa till date… yes, he has done well for Nigeria… but it’s inconceivable to even try to type Musa name on same sheet of paper with Finidi, Amuneke, Ikpeba and Babangida… I don’t hate Musa… but I feel he is past his prime! Musa used to be centre
forward at Kano Pillars… after then be operated
largely as a winger… but a winger is still a forward… that’s what I said. Finidi in his hey
day was the best right winger in the world…
not just Africa… Amuneke and Ikpeba won
African Footballer of The year… Kai no comparison her walahi!
Ived asked you to tell us Please WHO MADE FINIDI THE BEST WINGER IN THE WORLD….? What season was the award given to him…? How many goals and/or assists did he provide that season to win the Best winger in the world award…? who won the award the season before and the season after….? Was it France football that awarded him or FIFA…? Did he make Tunisia 94 XI, USA 94 XI or UCL 94/95 XI, Fifpro XI or ballon’dor shortlist to become best winger in the world…? Pls tell us and share the links of where Finidi was award the honour of BEST WINGER IN THE WORLD….LMAooo….till today you still cannot answer. The fables told you when you were still a boy rolling tyres in the village are still stuck in your brain…LMAO. Someone people have sold fables to some kids while they were still in the village, like the India 99-1 Nigeria fable, and they now want to pass it on to their children o….LMAOOoo
Musa has and was never been a centre forward for Kano Pillars. He scored all 18 goals he scored playing from the wings. Muhktari Shagari, Bello Musa Kofarmata, Rabiu Ali and Gambo Mohammed were the Pillars center forwards of that era. Musa has always been a winger at club and international level….he played for all national teams (u20, U23, WAFU, SE) simultaneously at some point, playing as a winger. His profile everywhere classes him as a winger. We watched him several times at CSKA Moscow competing in European competitions as a winger, how he should now suddenly be compared with Yekini, IK Uche, Amokachi, Ikpeba etc beats imagination….LMAOoo. Ikpeba has never even been a winger….LMAOO….he’s always been a centre forward… You see the way your desperation has been making you to flip flop like a virus-infected algorithm…? LMAO. Pls how many national team appearances did Amuneke have the year he won AFOTY…LMAOO…he won the award for being the only African player to win almost all tournaments on the continent (CAF CL, CAF super cup, AFCON, Egyptian league and cup double) within that season, not necessarily because he was the best SE player that year…..let me teach you some history you dont know….Lolz
Once again, till you scan through your factbook and get another winger that has provided or averaged 1 goal contribution every 3 matches for the SE, and has 4 world cup goals despite being a winger, AHMED MUSA REMAINS THE BEST WINGER FOR THE SE SINCE SEGUN ODEGBAMI…if you like let all the others play for Real Madridcelona FC during their playing days. The world cup is the HIGHEST LEVEL OF FOOTBALL ON EARTH. Anybody who can score FOUR SOLID goals…goals that earned nominations for top goals scored at those tournaments….is a GREAT.
And incase you missed it agian;
“…Ahmed Musa has come of age in the Eagles and I rank him among the greatest Nigerian strikers till date for scoring four goals for Nigeria in two World Cup outings…..The goals were quality strikes too, you know. They were technically solid goals scored against top teams and at the biggest football event in the world….That is no mean feat because it is a record which other Nigerian strikers will be striving to break in the future, said Ikpeba who himself scored a goal for Nigeria at the France ’98 World Cup….””
Baba Drey… I watched Intermilan vs Monaco yesterday UEFA CL 1997… Ikpeba played from the left side of attack in a 3man forward line… Thiery Henry entered in the second half… atimes a CF can be moved to the wings… that’s what happened to Musa. Finidi was not given any official title of best right winger in the world but since Ajax dominated for two seasons 95/96 and he was the right winger for Ajax… he was regarded by world pundits then and Nigerians know this just as other global football afficianados then …
Hohahahaha…. you “watched” Intermilan vs Monaco in the UCL (actually it was the UEFA cup) in 1997…??? For real…? Below is the starting line up showing Ikpeba partnering Andersson in attack…I am trying to wrap my head on how that set up would have resulted in him being played as a winger in the game.
https://www.transfermarkt.co.za/as-monaco_fc-internazionale/index/spielbericht/988730
You watched 1 match and concluded Ikpeba was a winger. Below is the Squadlist of Monaco for that season with IKPEBA LISTED AS A CENTRE-FORWARD
https://www.transfermarkt.co.za/as-monaco/startseite/verein/162/saison_id/1996
Below is the sqaud list when Ikpeba played at Dortmund, with Ikpeba clearly indicated as a centre-froward
https://www.transfermarkt.co.za/borussia-dortmund/startseite/verein/16/saison_id/1999
Below is the dossier of all the matches Ikpeba played at Dortmund…the fact that he was occasionally shifted away from his central role most likely for tactical reasons does not confer on him the title of winger….LMAOooo
https://www.transfermarkt.co.za/victor-ikpeba/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/115/verein/16.
What of in the SE…? Was he also playing on the “left side of attack” or as the one leading our lines with either Amokachi or Kanu supporting him…? Can you remind us how many SE games you ever saw Ikpeba operating from the wings…? Really…?
Compare the records with that of Musa below, lister as a WINGER in all his clubs and on all his profiles online
https://www.transfermarkt.co.za/vvv-venlo/startseite/verein/1426/saison_id/2010
https://www.transfermarkt.co.za/cska-moscow/startseite/verein/2410?saison_id=2011
https://www.transfermarkt.co.za/leicester-city/startseite/verein/1003/saison_id/2016
Even right from when he was playing from home we was a winger operating down our right flank, from u20s to u23s to WAFU to SE earning the nickname “Air Nigeria” in the process and up till recently when he is being inverted on the left too. A few times when we play 352 Rohr has chosen him to support Iheanacho in the centre. Otherwise MUSA has largely been a WINGER for club and country…..LMAOOoo…even village people know that.
So because Ajax dominated for 2 seasons and Finidi was playing for ajax he became the BEST WINGER in the world….LMAOOo. So Kanu too must have been the BEST STRIKER in the world since he also played for Ajax too at that time…..LMAOOo, Mike Riezeger must have been the BEST RIGHTBACK IN THE WORLD TOO, same as Kiki Musampa as the BEST LEFT WINGER IN THE WORLD, and Danny Blind the BEST CENTRE BACK IN THE WORLD…..LMAOOoo. Which world pundits regarded him as BEST WINGER IN THE WORLD…? The ones at the Confed cup in 1995 or the ones at France 98…?? LMAOoo. How many completed dribbles, goals and assist did he provide during that period that no other winger in the world provide, that made him the BEST WINGER IN THE WORLD. Is it the 1 goal and 1 assist he contributed in the UCL that made him the best winger in the world…LMAOOo..? If he was the best winger in the world, what was Marc Overmas and Ronald de Boer…? Best wingers on the galaxy…or best wingers in the Milky way…? LMAOooo.
Keep on deceiving yourself with the fables you were told as a kid…LMAOOoo. You will tell me who else conferred the title on him if not your local journalists.
Please till when you have found another winger who has provided or averaged 1 goal contribution every 3 matches for the Super Eagles, and has 4 world cup goals despite being a winger, AHMED MUSA REMAINS THE BEST WINGER FOR THE SE SINCE SEGUN ODEGBAMI. If you have found one, let me know, then we can continue this discussion. You can continue to argue with the record books ehn. let me know when you have found concrete facts….LMAOooo
Bro… Kanu played more games from the bench in Ajax than he started… Finidi was a starter… In 1995/1996 go ask anywhere it was popularly accepted that Finidi was the best right winger in the world and dont misquote me… I never said best winger as that will include left wing also… Finidi in that period was the best right winger in the world… Ajax won world club cup in Japan… so if they were world club champion how then will finidi who was the best right winger for Ajax not be adjudged the best right winger in the world… a. Winger is also a forward… even in any kind of system you are considering because they must contribute cutbacks, inswingers or pullout… argument no dey here. Anyhow you want to look at it… Finidi no be Ahmed Musa mate for ball… real ball watchers crossing the Finidi era to Musa era will tell you there is no debate there… I wish guys on this forum can air their opinion on those two… I don’t even want to mention Amuneke because he played largely on the left… Musa Ahmed wey Leicester chase go junior team… Musa will not near touchline in any club that Finidi and Amuneke played… during westerhoff era to Bonfrere… Amuneke and Ikpeba were those listed as left wingers… go check. Ikpeba being a centre forward does not mean he can’t be played on the left wing to do the work of a winger… any good forward can adapt in either on the flanks or through the middle… Ikpeba was good with both feet so any of the front positions was actually peace of cake for him… Musa is good but abeg no comoare to those dudes… The problem with you be say you must win argument and have the last say… Lol.
@Drey… I am waiting for when CSKA will celebrate Ahmed Musa like below… hahahaha.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=agRyFOzyXMc
Enjoy…
Hehehehe….where were you when CSKA Moscow welcomed Chidera Ejike with a video of Ahmed Musa which went viral…? Pls wake up and try harder…LMAOooo
Before we say anything now @Jimmyball will say we didn’t play football , so we should not talk as if he owns CSN.
Now Victor Ikpeba has spoken, yet he argues cuz it’s about Musa.
May be Ikpeba too did not play soccer, or his soccer career was low compared to Jimmybal’s level.
@Dr Drey, thanks for schooling him joor.
Well, scoring at the pinnacle of world football is no mean feat so, for that I rate Ahmed Musa very highly.
However, if we are to talk about what I choose to call “wing-play aesthetics”, then I am so sorry, Ahmed Musa does not even come close to one of the best Super Eagles wingers for me.
I know: headline grabbing goals are a currency of success in international football. Hence Musa’s jaw dropping goals against Argentina in 2014 and his ice melting goals against Iceland have added his name in the echelons of greatness no doubt.
But when it comes to seeing a winger glide and waltz with grace and poise across the pitch, I will pick even the much underrated John Utaka ahead of Ahmed Musa.
If both players belonged to the same era, not in a million years will I start Musa ahead of Utaka.
Utaka’s game is beautiful to the eye and his craft is compellingly captivating.
Yes, Musa achieved far more for Nigeria but that is not synonymous as saying his wing-play is appealing.
But, no be “appealing” we wan chop. I get it so I see where those who rate Musa highly are coming from.
Even Odemwingie and Obinna Nsofor are wingers I would rate ahead of Musa – not on Super Eagles record or caps where Musa is king – just on how beautiful their interpretation of wing-play is to the eye.
If he had been injury free and consistent, another beautiful winger was Ogbuke Obasi. His leg work and cut-ins were cutting edge.
Ahmed Musa is good and his world cup goals were well taken. Interestingly, those goals have helped create a legend out of a myth!
