Clemens Westerhof has told Completesports.com that he does not consider Desert Foxes of Algeria ‘strong enough’ to oust the Super Eagles in the semifinals of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The Dutchman says he’s strongly convinced that the AFCON title is for Nigeria, that Super Eagles have their own fourth continental title ambition in their hands.
The Super Eagles AFCON 1994 title -winning coach spoke exclusively to Completesports.com from his base in the Netherlands ahead Sunday’s AFCON 2019 semifinal confrontation between the Super Eagles and the Desert Foxes of Algeria.
“Super Eagles will win, yes. Algeria to stop Super Eagles? No, they are not strong enough to beat the Super Eagles,” Westerhof boasted.
“When they (Super Eagles) lost to Madagascar, I said it was not the Eagles I knew. I said it was shameful, disgraceful.
“Now they are in top form. With Cameroon out, South Africa gone home too, so it is Super Eagles and the cup. It is in their hands and I don’t see Algeria stopping them.”
He added: “Yes, Super Eagles will win (against Algeria). They will also win the cup. The players are experienced, they are now playing with good mentality.
“It (winning the title) is in their hands. They can win it. Algeria is not a problem.”
Westerhof arrived Nigeria in 1989 and the following year (1990) he steered the Super Eagles to a silver medal finish in Algeria.
At Senegal ’92 AFCON, Westerhof’s Super Eagles finished in third place, setting the tone for the 1994 triumph in Tunisia as well as Nigeria’s debut at FIFA World Cup finals in the USA.
Since he left the the Nigeria job, Westerhof has not hidden or pretended about his love for the nation’s football, particularly the Super Eagles.
The Algeria – Nigeria semifinal match on Sunday at the Cairo International Stadium will kick off at 8pm Nigerian time.

Yes oga Clemens Westerhof I strongly agree with you that algeria are not match for super eagles with this there current form
I am already predicting Nigeria vs senegal for explosive final
Westerhof won silver at first attempt then fell to bronze medal.. He wasn’t sacked then he finally won gold medal at 1994 and first FIFA World Cup qualification. God bless the management of nfa at that period.. They believed in him and everyone remembers him till today..
The best news after afcon for me is retaining our coach
I concur with you.
Same here
Exactly what I want too. He’s a good coach he deserve to keep his job
Ololo@ you are on point . the coach should be retain
At the end of 90 minutes of intense football contest,it will be Nigeria 1- 0 Algeria . The goal will be scored at exact 81st minute.
Are you now Octopus? Did you dreamt about it to know the scoreline and precise time for the goal? Well, at the end, I hope Naija wins!
Many thanks to you Mr. Westerhof. Mr. Westerhof and I omo9ja have the same views. I have studied the Algerian team inside out and by God’s grace the trophy is ours.
However, I still believe that Mr. Westerhof have something to offer Super Eagles. He may not be our coach but having him around the team will help the team.
This man is really good. I also noticed CSN, they are have been adding the time to their news which I have been saying a long time but now I will say kudos to CSN. For those of you who have been calling me names, can you see now that I’m doing a good job? You na see am ba?
What do you achieved with your comments? I guess epe sękęrę abi (abusive words)? Ahahaha. Those epe sękęrę won’t help ooo lol. You better repent before it is too late.
If you read mr. Westerhof and mine, you can agree with me that I knew what I’m talking about.

Listen to me and you learn a lot from elder. It’s not about abusive words but your intelligents. That’s my advice to coach Rohr’s disciples.
Stay humble and don’t be disrespectful. Good luck to my beloved coach Oga Rohr and his team. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
Those days of ur abusive words are over right. God of all flesh is Almighty God who has the power at hand to turn the table around in the life of my own brother @Omo9ja.
Those days of ur cruel insult at anybody that goes against ur view abt Super Eagles… I knew ur at acting base on ur hidden love for ur country. You are a man who never support anytin short of ur standard.
Good to see ur father like words
Omo9ja!!!!
Rohr can never be ur beloved coach, u’re a very big pretender. Na person way no know u i dy pity. Green snake….
The way you write your own English is what I like most about you. Don’t find it surprising that people are calling you names, you sincerely deserve it. Omo iya, jawo lapon tio yo dakun, bad deeds do hunt and I really hope you understand that better.
I wish Super eagles all the very best! #SoarEagles
we can play algeria with 10 players and win them.. the only team i afraid of was and south africa… now they ‘ve gone.. algeria na walk away joor.
In my opinion, the match against Algeria will not be as tough as that of Bafana Bafana despite the way people are overrating the Algerians.
We need to stop under rating any team because we ourselves is yet to have a perfect team the grace and humulity is what is seeing us through so we need to remain humble until after the tournament before we start down talking a team that has virtually strolled into the semi final except against CIV.
Not to forget that they also have strong bench that a player of Brahimi is yet to taste full action should tell the strength of this team in attack. Rohr knows why he is putting the pressure on Algeria so we don’t need to put the pressure on our boys by saying we will work over Algeria. All the same let’s keep praying and take our chances tomorrow unlike the many chances we missed against RSA.
Yes, the numerous chances we missed against SA worried me a lot. The final ball was not good enough in most cases, and when it was good, the strikers were wasteful in front of goal. We need improvement in this area. Let’s convert the opportunities that come our way!!!
That is the prayer let’s take our chances because we should have silenced those Zungu and Co boys who left Egypt thinking they were unlucky because we didn’t load their net like basketball despite all the chances Chukwueze created for musa and ighalo.
Don’t believe this old man. Algeria is the best team in this tournament. The game will be very difficult with an advantage for Algeria.
