Fulham manager Marco Silva has weighed in on the criticisms that trailed Calvin Bassey’s performance in the club’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Bassey was blamed for the two goals conceded by the Whites in the encounter played at the Tottenham Stadium.
The Nigeria international was deployed in an unfamiliar right centre-back position and he struggled all through the game.
Silva refused to blame the versatile defender for his side’s defeat in the game.
“Tottenham pressed really strong and more on Calvin,” Silva was quoted by the club’s official website.
“They knew that we were playing a left-footed central defender on the right-hand side, and we were punished for the mistake.
“We spoke at half-time that the solution for Bassey has to be completely different, the position of our midfield has to be completely different for him to have a solution.
“Not just the decision from Calvin was wrong for the second goal, the players should be there to avoid this type of mistake because of course it can happen. It is much more of a process than just one player making a bad decision.”
Bassey linked up with Fulham from Eredivisie giants Ajax in the summer.
The 23-year-old has made five league appearances for the London club.
The game against Tottenham Hotspur was his first start since August.

Just what I said. Only those praying for Bassey to fail will run to criticise without carefully and wholesomely looking at what actually went wrong.
I don’t know why they are crucifying the young man, even though he made mistake, he played well and defended relentlessly in the game.
