Eight Brazil players are set to be missing from Premier League games at the weekend after the Brazilian federation invoked a FIFA rule that will temporarily suspend them.
Premier League clubs had collectively voted to ban players from linking up with their national teams this month if it meant travel to and from a country on the UK government’s coronavirus red list, which includes Brazil, Argentina and Turkey among others.
There were fears that any travel from such countries to the UK could pose a health and safety risk to players and staff, as well as having a disruptive effect because of enforced quarantines.
There were eight Brazilian players called up for international duty with the Selecao. They were Liverpool trio, Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino, Manchester City pair Ederson and Gabriel Jesus, Chelsea’s Thiago Silva, Manchester United’s Fred and Leeds’ Raphinha.
But their respective clubs all blocked from them travelling. That is against FIFA’s rules, which obligates clubs to release any player called up for international duty.
Now, BBC Sport reports that Brazil have called on FIFA to invoke five-day suspensions on the eight players in question that will prevent them from appearing in the Premier League for their club sides this weekend. The bans will be in place from 10-14 September, which would also stop Thiago Silva and Fred from being able to play in the Champions League group stage next Tuesday.

With back-up goalkeeper Zack Steffen already ruled out with coronavirus, Manchester City would be forced to turn to veteran third-choice Scott Carson on Saturday with Ederson banned.
Everton forward Richarlison was also called up and blocked from travelling by his club, but it is said that Brazil have not asked him to be included in the ban they want applied to the others because the Toffees permitted him to represent the Selecao at the Olympics last month.
90min understands that one of the clubs affected is now planning to be without their Brazilian players this weekend, but this has caught them by surprise and they are not happy at all.
This follows Brazilian health officials rushing the pitch during Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Argentina in an attempt to detain Argentines Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero, Giovani Lo Celso and Emiliano Buendia, who were accused of failing to abide by the country’s quarantine rules following their arrival from England. The match was eventually suspended.

Tit for tat. Or as we say in Nigeria, DO ME, I DO YOU.
If the English clubs chose to block Brazil from using their players for important international matches, then Brazil too chose to block English clubs from using same players for Premier League and Champions League matches for 5 days.
Let’s see who blinks first in this staring contest!
Very very well supported reprisal action. FIFA must not and I repeat must not allow the British FA usurp it’s position as the numero Uno in football matters around the globe, otherwise, the world of football will greatly regret it.
GBAM!
Yes next time they won’t toy with the almighty Brazil.
But some racist was here ranting that only African players were blocked from representing their countries by the EPL/UK authorities….LMAOOOo. Illiteracy is indeed a disease.
Good move from FIFA….its high time it started asserting its authority in this game. FIFA under Infantinno has looked more like a dog that can neither bark nor bite….like a glorified chihuahua. Imagine if our make-or-break WCQ double header were going to be held in a UK redlist country, has that not effectively weakened our squad and compromised the WC’s desire to have a better team representing the continent…?
Clubs who fail to release their players must be denied the opportunity of using those players for twice the number of days they wouldn’t have had them if they had honored their national calls….maybe everybody will come to their senses.
It just doesnt make sense that one team will be weakened by the selfishness of certain clubs.
The Europeans like to bend rules for themselves and sneer at others… South American federations can bark a bit because they have high profile players. We saw how they made light covid 19 restrictions just to stage Euro 2020 finals not long… even the Covid is still catching players in UK and Italy. Will they now list themselves as risk zones for their world cup qualifying games? Imagine Italy that was hit most in Europe… Will English players now be made to quarantine for 10days if they go play in say Italy? It’s good FIFA is applying muscle!
Keep your dancing from pillar to post to yourself.
Every country has its own rules and restrictions to protect itself….even Nigeria has, there are certain countries from which you are mandated to quarantine if you are entering Nigeria….and they all have the rights to do so.
But the question is…..Was it only African players who were blocked from representing their countries by the EPL/UK authorities….??? Was it all African countries the EPL/UK authorities placed of the red list…?
Simple and short…!
But the racism in your blood will always make you see all life problems from the lens of colour of skins…..LMOOO
