Manchester City recorded their third win of the season against Chelsea after a comfortable 4-0 win in Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup third round tie at the Etihad.
A brace from Riyad Mahrez and a goal each from Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden secured City’s passage into the fourth round where they will face either Arsenal or Oxford United.
Recall, City ousted Chelsea in this season’s Carabao Cup following a 2-0 win also at the Etihad.
City went close to opening the score on 11 minutes as Mahrez broke on the left but his low cross was saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.
In the 19th minute Cole Palmer raced on to a long pass went one on one with Arrizabalaga but saw his low strike hit the side netting.
City took the lead on 23 minutes off a brilliant Mahrez free-kick which sailed over the Chelsea wall into the top left corner.
City doubled their lead on 30 minutes through Julian Alvarez who converted from the penalty spot, after Kai Havertz handled a corner kick with his hand following consultation with VAR.
Alvarez almost doubled his goal on 36 minutes but his tame strike inside the box was saved by Arrizabalaga.
Mahrez could have made it 3-0 as City we’re awarded a free-kick in a promising area but his goal-bound effort was punched over the bar by Arrizabalaga.
In the 38th minute Foden got City’ third as he slotted home Kyle Walker’s cutback.
On 45 minutes City broke on the left but Mahrez’s cross evaded everybody inside the box.

Before the start of the second half Chelsea made two changes, bringing on Denis Zakaria and new signing David Fofana for Havertz and Mateo Kovacic.
On 55 minutes Mason Mount ran onto a quick free-kick but his shot deflected off a City player and went out for a corner.
City continued to probe for more goals and almost got rewarded on 73 minutes but Mahrez’s cutler went just wide.
With 13 minutes left Zakaria received a pass close to the edge of the box but his shot deflected off a City player for a corner.
Mahrez got his second goal of the game and City’s fourth from the penalty spot on 85 minutes, after Kalidou Koulibaly fouled Foden.
