Former Nigerian striker, Jonathan Akpoborie has expressed dissatisfaction with the Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro’s poor substitutions against Sierra Leone in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Monrovia.
Osimhen scored twice in the opening half, but Sierra Leone staged a second-half comeback before Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench to net the winning goal for Nigeria.
However, questions was raised on the Portuguese tactician’s substitution which many have criticised, including the former Wolfsburg star.
Akpoborie in a chat with Completesports.com said that Peseiro’s poor substitution could have cost the team defeat against Sierra Leone.
He noted that despite the array of talents at his disposal, his inability to make good changes could affect the team in a major tournament.
“Yes I am happy that the team have qualified for the 2023 AFCON but then the Super Eagles coach has plenty of work to do when it comes to making substitution.
“Nigeria could have ended up losing the game against Sierra Leone due to Peseiro’s poor substitution in the second half, a things that was so glaring.
“If Nigeria must achieve anything tangible at the tournament in Ivory Coast then Peseiro must know his team better in a bid to make quality changes that will be result-oriented.”

Many former Nigerian footballers talk like they have no brains. Or maybe they want to remain in the limelight.Osimhen was badly mauled by Sierra Leone defenders and appeared injured. Had Peseiro allowed him to play on, critics would have surfaced from the same quarters.
Exactly and Awo definitely needed a runout Awoniyi is a very very good player and deserved a runout. I was also talking to myself and asking the coach to substitute Osi so he does not worsen the injury we need him fit especially as he may have medicals to attend if by the grace of God he gets that lucrative move away from racist Napoli who can not even acknowledge that he is thier Main man after Maradona. Not that Kvara poser who these Italians/European are criminally trying to exalt above Osimhen and trying to award Napoli’s Famous season as down to his efforts and not that of Osimhen.
Kindly be informed that team achievement is not all about scoring goals. Some players are in the team to make things happen, they are the architect of the team’s overall performance. Osimhen is world-class,but I think Kvara deserves the accolade.
INFANT, TO BE SINCERE TO OURSELVES AND CALL A SPADE A SPADE, COACH PASEIRO LACK TECHNICAL INDEBT ABOUT GAME. HE HAS A LOT OF PROBLEMS:
**(1). HE HAS A PROBLEM OF NOT USING FORMS & CONSISTENCY TO BE INVITING PLAYERS.
**(3). HE ALWAYS USING EGO, NAMES & SENIORITY TO BE INVITING/USING PLAYERS
**(4). HE LACK TACTICAL INDEBT IN SUBSTITUTING PLAYERS.
IF PROPER ACTION WAS NOT TAKING BEFORE AFCON, NIGERIA MAY EXPERIENCE ANOTHER WORST AFCON FAILURE IN HISTORY LIKE THAT OF LAST AFCON COMPETITON COACHED BY EQUAVOEN
Oga indebt, na wa for u oo! Take it easy with the coach;with time, things will fall into place.
As l said before, this coach is the worst manager Nigeria ever had. He could not convince himself why he could not bring in victor Boniface and Gift Ouban to the Team. With this coach in charge at AFCON, Nigeria will surely be send back after the first 3 games.
Edoman, just stop your nonsense critiques please…
@Ola Why must he stop are you saying Gift Orban does not deserve a call up. Let me tell you based on the trajectory of last season and form Orban name should be 2 on that list of SE invites.
So dont shut anybody up For speaking the truth grow a back bone unless you are part of the problem.
A BELGIAN based player a NO 2 of SUPER EAGLES???
Stop taking that cheap GHANAIAN weed, young man!
Until we see GIFT ORBAN do it in TOP 5 FRANCE for starters, he will keep playing second fiddle to OSINHEN, AWONIYI and IHEANACHO
No sane COACH will invite a BELGIAN FIRST DIVISION player ahead of a PREMIER LEAGUE OR LA LIGA OR SERIA A OR FRENCH LIGUE ONE player; especially when those players are scoring goals for their CLUB SIDES and SUPER EAGLES!
GIFT ORBAN, VICTOR BONIFACE etal can only be invited for DEAD RUBBERS or during CAMPING for a Major tournament but not when SE is prosecuting a MAKE OR MAR MATCH!
Gift Orban is a proven scorer. We cannot afford to lose him to another country, say Togo for which he’s also qualified. Where was Amokachi playing in 1994? Belgium where he won the Black Pearl award as the best African player. He and Yekini formed probably the most lethal striking duo in recent history.
Besides in 1990 when Cameroun got to the QF and defeated the then reigning WC Champions with Maradona leading their team, where were most of the Cameroun team playing? The one who danced with the flagpole was retired in the Caribbean!
In 2002, Havelange then the FIFA President stated Nigeria had a front 6 as good as any team. In the pre WC matches, we defeated Republic of Ireland 2 – 1 in Dublin. The first team to do so for a long time. Roy Keane of Manchester United captained that team. Prior to that Nigeria had ignored a good striker who then chose to play for Poland. Nigeria, without an injured Papilo lost to Argentina 0 – 1 and Sweden 2 – 3, before drawing with England. In addition to losing Kanu to injury, our number who was playing great football had not been scoring in the friendly matches. He had no confidence during the WC. In my view, if the striker who chose Poland had played for Nigeria, that 2002 team would have coped with the loss of Papilo and scaled thru to the second round.
Conclusion, Nigeria must do its best to ensure its nationals play for the Eagles. Morocco showed the way in 2022 with players scouted from different countries. Additionally, let’s try out a local coach and have confidence in him. But not Finidi who hasn’t done enough in my opinion.
NFF should part way with this paseiro man… This coach doesn’t have it to take this our team anyway… Ever since he came… We haven’t see anything different from what Rohr was playing… We need a good class coach… With the combination gbega Ogunbote as our coach nd Others local coaches supporting him… we can do more than this instead of wasting money on this paseiro…. Nothinnnnnnng as change oo with way we are playing
Our problem in everything remains defending glaring rubbish. This coach is not good enough for Super Eagles, truth be told. Besides, where a player plays or started his carrier isn’t too important. There are in-form players that was not called up. We’d the likes of Amokachi, Uche Okafor, Uche Okechukwu and others playing already for Eagles but were still playing in Nigerian leagues. We are still the ones that will be disappointed since our football managers choose to appoint half baked coaches for the national teams.
Bounch of illiterate people comment here, this coach qualify you for Africa cup while your formal coach Austin could not both Africa and world cup , this is one of our best coach for those who have sense,
Did this Jonathan know how to coach b4 saying rubbish, give the coach a free hand pls don’t interfere
Is only in Nigeria everybody think he know better than the coach .
Formal player does not make you know better than a coach all the Jonathan , desu should shut up
My Nigerian brother, for those clamoring against the coach remember what happened after you brought in Equaveon you lost out on the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. If you think you are better than the Technical team then you better think before saying anything.
