Former Kwara United coach, Samson Unuanel believes Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro can deliver the 2023 African cup of Nations just like Clemens Westerhof and Stephen Keshi if he can build a better understanding among the players.
Recall that the Dutch tactician led Nigeria to win the 1994 AFCON title in Tunisia while Keshi led the team to win the 2013 AFCON title in South Africa.
It will be noted that Nigeria rounded off their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series with a 6-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe on Sunday.
Victor Osimhen scored a hat-trick in the game the Super Eagles dominated from start to finish. Further goals from Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi and Samuel Chukwueze was enough to get the job done.
Nigeria also finished as group leaders with 15 points from six matches ahead of Guinea Bissau, who finished with 13 points.
In a chat with Completesports.com, Unuanel stated that Peseiro can emulate the achievements of Westerhof and Keshi if the players can understand themselves better.
“This team is looking really good. The coach is gradually molding a team capable of winning the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
“Yes, he can emulate the achievement of Westerhof and Keshi considering the array of players at his disposal. All what I think the team needs right now, is for the players to understand themselves better.
“We have a very strong team and I have no doubt that can make Nigerians proud in AFCON 2023.”
Playing career
Born in Coruche, Santarém District, Peseiro never played in higher than the Segunda Liga as a professional, starting out at Sport Lisboa e Cartaxo in 1979. In that competition, he represented Amora FC, Clube Oriental de Lisboa, GD Samora Correia and S.C.U. Torreense, for a total of five seasons.
34-year-old Peseiro retired at the end of the 1993–94 season in the fourth division, with local club União de Santarém.

Coach unuanel you said that Super Eagles need to understand each other I agree with you, but the real things which will success SE in the next CAF Cup in Cote De’Ivore January 2024 are as follows: NFF must prepare this team well in order to make bending, that means NFF must organize more than three friendly matches before the final tournement; Peseiro must strengthen defensive side on midfield and defense, that means he must make defensive midfield and center back strong and rigorous with ordering defensive midfielders and center back, side backs to play rigorous and drastic football mixing with good coverage, sliding style to control over the matches and making good tackling on the ball in order to spoil rival’s attacks, take care of set-pieces which are committed by center backs; for a long time Super Eagles have been lacking defensive traits which have cost them many CAF cups in 88,90,2000 in the final, I think technical committee must set a workshop on why SE have lost many CAF cups final? I think they will find that SE coaches do not take care of defensive side; defensive sides are teams corner stone to build strong one; Nigeria football culture depends on attacking mentality , so it neglects defensive mentality or defensive school; Cameroon,Ghana,Morocco, Cote De’Ivore all thoes teams have excellent defensive school mentality; SE can adopt the same school or this pattern of play; I sdvice Peseiro to adopt this school or this pattern without not forgetting attacking style.
Peseiro please go, take a look on Verona Folorunsho and quickly convince him as well as invite him. That boy is deep lying defensive midfielder you are looking for right now. Quick off the ground, strong in tackles, good awareness, dangerous long range shots, tactically disciplined, etc. I honestly can find a better nigerian for that position right now.
Thumbs up @Unuanel. Nigeria can do well in the Afcon if Peseiro selects the right players.
The right players for Super Eagles exactly must be defensive players neither in midfield or defense side; Peseiro must select Azubiuke Okechukwu, Anderson Esiti cause he is stronger DM on SE players now, Ifeanyi Matthew, Daniel Daga in defensive midfield; he must make good pair oyibo to be consonant for SE just like(Ajayi, Bassay) or ( Ajayi, Omeruo) he can add Toruniarigh to a one of thoes three defence backs, also he can add to them Kevin Akpoguma, exclude William Troost cause he is shaky defence back makes many errors on SE defence.
