Top members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are rooting for an expatriate to succeed Jose Peseiro as head coach of the Super Eagles, reports Completesports.com.
Peseiro left the position following the expiration of his contract in February.
A number of local and foreign coaches have already applied for the top job.
The NFF has reportedly shortlisted seven coaches for the position and are expected to name the successful candidate before the end of this month.
“I won’t say the NFF is divided over hiring a foreign or local coach for the Super Eagles. The truth is most board members and those in technical committee want another expatriate to take charge of the Super Eagles,” a reliable source in football source told Completesports.com.

“The NFF know the importance of qualifying for the World Cup after missing out the last time in Qatar. They don’t want to gamble by making a wrong choice especially after the Super Eagles poor start to the qualifiers.
“We are likely to see another foreigner take over from Jose Peseiro, that I can authoritatively reveal at this moment.”
The Super Eagles next engagement is a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matchday three tie against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
The encounter will hold at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Friday, June 7.
The three-time African champions will also take on the Squirrels of Benin at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan few days later.

Good Update Please make sure he is a top tier one.
NFF SHOULD EMPLOY A COACH THAT IS HIGHLY TECHNICAL & BE RESPECTED BY PLAYERS.
THE REASON WHY SOME EX-PLAYERS AND SOME PRESENT SUPER EAGLE PLAYERS ARE IN SUPPORT OF INDIGENOUS COACH(especiallyAmuneke, Finidi) IS BECAUSE THAT, IT WILL BE VERY EASY FOR THEM TO PENETRATE IN HIM, CONTROLLING HIM & DICTATING TO HIM WHEN IT COMES TO PLAYERS SELECTION, WHICH IT CANNOT BE POSSIBLE ON FOREIGN COACH. ALSO, IT WILL BE VERY EASY TO DO BUSINESS BY INTRODUCING PLAYERS TO INDIGENOUS COACH AFTER COLLECTING BRIBE FROM SUCH BE PLAYERS.
** NOTE: We should not be deceiving ourselves in this country because of the way things work for other countries (e.g. Democracy work well in America, S/Africa, Ghana but it doesn’t work well in Nigeria).
THE WAY THINGS WORK FOR COACH H. SHEHATA(EGYPT), COACH ALIOU CISSE(SENEGAL) BY WINNING AFCON FOR THEIR COUNTY (and also qualified for next AFCON easily) MAY NOT WORK IN NIGERIA DUE TO CORRUPTION, IMPROPER PLANNING, LACK OF STRUCTURES, BAD MANAGEMENT.
IN NIGERIA, WE ARE TOO RELIGIONISTIC, REGIONISTIC, TRIBALISTIC & SENTIMENTAL.
EVEN when Keshi won AFCON in 2013, he failed woefully to qualified for next AFCON due to bad management(Pinnick VS Giwa), sentiment, jealous, hatred towards some players (e.g. Yobo, I.K. uche, V.moses).
**** NFF SHOULD GO FOR THE BEST COACH.***
What matters most is to move our football forward & not celebrating FLUKE WINNING again. We struggle/manage to beat CIV by penalty in group stage. But E/guinea beat CIV 4-0 convincingly.
*** KESHI WON AFCON IN 2013, BUT WE CANNOT BOAST OF PLAYERS, THE TEAM FOR THE FUTURE (for instance: Sunday MBA, Uzoenyi, Oshaniwa, Agbim are nowhere to be found in future football). AND NIGERIA FAILED TO QUALIFIED FOR NEXT TWO CONSECUTIVE AFCON.
WHAT A SHAME!!!!
**** WESTERHOF WIN AFCON IN 1994, BUT NIGERIA CAN BOAST OF FUTURE FOOTBALL (for instance: Oliseh, Okocha, Amokachi, Amuneke shine for future football).
WHAT A BRIGHTER FUTURE!!!!!
### NFF SHOULD EMPLOY A GOOD DISCIPLINE, TACTICAL, HIGHLY RESPECTED COACH ###
Good one. Local coaches are full of sentiment
Way to go. The NFF shouldn’t even consider applications from any local coaches. No local coach can beat South African Bross Hugo tactically
The best coach is required for the job. NFF has to do the right thing.
1) CAN this coach win us the next Afcon?
2) CAN this coach get us to the quarter final of the 2026 world cup or better?
The operative word is CAN, not WILL. We can’t say WILL, because nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. But we can at least ensure that the coach CAN, which means he is capable, competent and committed to the cause.
Do your due diligence, NFF. Do your due diligence.
Your number 2 question looks funny. You never even qualify you are dreaming of world cup quarter final…..lol
Baba, na from dream reality dey come.
WHY NOT GIVE SUPER EAGLE COACHING JOB TO EMMANUEL AMUNEKE
SHORT TIME BEFORE OUR NEXT GAMES!!! so AMUNEKE is the best because of time to prepare. amuneke is two time assistant super Eagle coach and that is very crucial if our Nff Jamboree officials actually know football or know what they are doing. I have it on good international information that some of our nff members and technical committee have been bribed and some are after what they stand to gain. Mr nff president should simply hand amuneke and let him select his assistants himself no excuses! that is what immediate effect. If you idiots appoint a journeyman white coach and we eventually fail to go to next world Cup after the last world Cup disaster-class decisions by the these jamboree Nff and all his bodies, then we will all protest seriously to the world and fifa and Nigeria president and sack all of them out of office impromptu! Maybe we can also appoint a foreign Nff president and it’s foreign nff members and technical incompetent committee! Give amuneke this job already and let him hand pivot and pick his assistants personally! WE SHOULDN’T DISREGARD AND DISRESPECT OUR OWN, Amuneke Emmanuel is and should be crowned…
A COUNTRY THAT IS NOT EVEN NEAR TO BE CALL GIANT OF AFRICA DOESN’T WASTE TIME IN EMPLOYING/APPOINTING A NEW COACH. IN LAST AFCON, GHANA, IVORY COAST, S/AFRICA FUMBLED, THEIR COACH WAS SACKED AND THEY EMPLOY A NEW COACH IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT WASTING TIME.
IN THIS YEAR AFCON, ALGERIA FA SACKED THEIR COACH & THEY EMPLOYED A NEW COACH WITHIN THREE WEEKS.
OUR NFF ALWAYS LIKE TO BE WASTING TIME IN EMPLOYING NEW COACH BECAUSE OF RIGGING, MANIPULATION & CORRUPTION.
*** IN THE AREA WHETHER TO EMPLOY INDIGENOUS OR FOREIGN COACH:
WHAT IS IMPORTANT MOST IS TO EMPLOY A COACH THAT WILL BE:
1. RESPECTED BY PLAYERS & KNOW OUR PLAYERS( both local & foreign) AND AFRICAN FOOTBALL
2. SELF & HIGHLY DISCIPLINE
3. NOT TOLERATED NONSENSE
4. ALWAYS USE PRESENT FORM AS A YARDSTICK FOR PLAYERS INVITATION
5. NOT USING EXPERIENCE/CAPTAINSHIP/LEADERSHIP(that is not fit), EGO, OR SENIORITY IN PLAYERS SELECTION
7. READY TO IMPOSE DISCIPLINE & COMMITMENT(with characters)INTO THE TEAM.
8. READY NOT TO WORSHIP ANY PLAYERS & NOT BE INDISPENSABLE OF ANY PLAYERS
9. HE SHOULD READY TO SEARCH FOR PLAYERS ANYWHERE & NOT USE SENTIMENT OR FAVOURISM IN INVITING/SELECTING PLAYERS
10. HE SHOULD BE UPDATED & UP-TO-DATE IN FOOTBALL TACTICAL
11. HE SHOULD STAND FIRM & NOT ALLOW ANYBODY TO BE CONTROLLING OR DICTATING TO HIM.
12. HE SHOULD READY TO WORK WITH HIS TECHNICAL CREWS
So why was that condition specified in the job requirement? Why technically disqualify some candidates midway into the recruitment process? Why waste their time?
Whatever they do, they should please not hire that former Cameroonian coach. If Cameroun didn’t consider him good enough to continue in his role, then what is the fantasy of Nigeria about him?
I mean NOT specified… Why change the goal post or the rule of the game midway into the match?
I think Etoo offered him the job, but he turned it down. In my opinion, he has a better profile to the others. I’m good with anyone as long as the person is not a local coach bcos we’ve suffered at the hands of local coaches. If it’s not bribe, it’s agents manipulation, federal character, fights with players or marketing players.
OWNGOALNIGERIA CONFIRM AMUNEKE AS D NEW COACH. I HOPE WE DONT REGRET THIS.
Amunike is the right man for the job. Look no further. There is something about amunike and super eagles . He was the golden boy of his era scoring championship deciding goals for his team. Now he has come into coaching with the
Same touch. Amunike from the left and finidi george from the right from the greatest era of the team
Spells nutin but success for the team…the eagles is ready to fly
The stars have aligned for the eagles to fly.
This is philosophical
Nff do the needful once and let eagles soar
Diego Maradona (RIP), the absolute GOAT of all time, was a poor coach for Argentina. So have other great players who went into coaching.
Amunike has been POOR as a men’s team coach. Poor performances at Club and National Team level.
We neEd a fore ignore coach, who has no direct connection with our African rival for I fear sabotage and compromise. A Nigerian coach may not easily earn the respect of our professional players. This is why I need the Assistant coach of Gadiola.
I salute all the comments that have been made on this super eagles coaching issue.May the best happen for us as a nation. My only concern is the heart of some of our leaders towards the nation. For our technical committee members to recommend 3 coaches and 2 of those coaches have no African football experience baffles me.let the best get the job, however we must stop running down our own simply because we are black.
Ęfokan balę my people. Amunike is the best and would be crown as the new Super Eagles chief coach in few days to come and with the inclusion of Michael Nsien combo, Super Eagles will take us to the promised land.
Are we not tired of these half done foreign coaches ni ba?
Let’s try new things and I am pretty sure that Amunike will do anything possible to make it to the world cup and Afcon kę.
Enough of foreign coach for now. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
Continue deceiving yourself.
Michael Nsien has already been appointed U20 coach for the US. End of story.
Please, what exactly is Amunike’s accomplishment(s) at the senior level?
Was he not part of the consortium of meat headed, dullard Nigerian coaches that flopped and lost to a hapless, useless Ghanaian team that led to our missing the 2022WC?
This is the person you are touting as the best? That is laughable.
Surprised to see the name of a serial failure being pushed around by people with ulterior motives. A former player that is known for his divisive and technical bereft decision who has failed in all senior team engagements including getting demoted to youth teams. Amunike should first develop himself with Heartland FC, win the league like Finidi before being considered for any national team job. The same clueless coach that could not qualify for the U-20’s despite the arrays of stars in his team.
Concenciao is the most qualified of the shortlisted three coaches.
Totally agree with you. Amunike has nothing to offer the Super Eagles. The job is far above his pay grade. He is unproven, he failed the few opportunities he had to prove himself. The only record he parades is winning the U-17 world cup as a 5th coach to do that for Nigeria. We need an experienced and tested coach to handle the senior team.
Just shut your stupid mouth, what makes your so called concencaio better than Amuneke. If he was that good, he should be coaching Brazil or Portugal, not coming to Africa to coach
Emmanuel Amunike is a big name in Nigeria and African football. Your constant ranting changes nothing. Do you have better football knowledge than Westerhoff and Bonfere Jo. Mtcheew
That’s because you have your opinion while others have theirs’. Nonetheless, whatever you say doesn’t stop Amunike from being a big name in Nigeria and African football. Furthermore, you don’t have better football knowledge than Bonfrere Jo and Westerhoff
John you said it all. Let’s pray the best man gets the Job aside the torrent guy.
NFF did the right thing by selecting three best coaches based on record and achievements. Amuneke, a business man, came in through the back door using the influence of the so-called powers that be in the country. Nigerians will not forgive all these corrupt leaders should we fail to qualify for the world cup. But for Amuneke, the business man, only the time will tell. Most of you singing his praises will soon realize the harm you have done to the country.
Mostly like AMU will be given the job according to an unconfirmed reports. If he is ,have concluded that Nigeria will be unavailable at the next World Cup. And for those that want him to be the coach after six round of matches the result will show which sides won
Legend Emmanuel Amuneke all the way for the Super Eagles Coach!!!
CAF African Footballer of the year 1994;
Tunisia 1994 AFCON Gold Winner;
Atlanta 1996 Olympics Gold Winner;
A Wing Wizard for FC Barcelona, Zamalek FC, Sporting FC,…
Coach and Formator of the Current CAF African Best Footballer (Victor Osimhen 9);
A Coach of high standing – World Beater and Winner (Chile 2015 Gold, U17 World Cup);
Coached – Julius Berger, Ocean Boys, Al Khartoum, Tanzania, Zanaco, et al…
Super Eagles Legend Emmanuel Amuneke for the SE Head Coach.
Haters deal with it!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t mind these clueless people ranting up and down. What does Austin Eguaveon have over Emmanuel Amunike? Yet he has coached Super Eagles twice. Onigbinde nko? Emmanuel Amunike played football to the highest level. If not for injuries, he would’ve achieved more – a cracking footballer back in the days. Gave us AFCON, Olympic Gold and Afro-Asian Cup. Former African footballer of the year. Became the fifth coach to win U-17 World Cup for Nigeria. Helped Tanzania qualify for AFCON after so many decades. The only dent on his CV is not qualifying our U-20 to World Cup which I largely blame NFF for not protesting for the match to be delayed due to heavy downpour. The rain was just persistent and too much that day. As for getting sacked by Tanzania and Al Marreck, hasn’t Mourinho being fired by Chelsea, Real Madrid, Man United and AS Roma? Coaches get hired and fired!
Amunike should get the job. He is qualified! What was Cisse’s (of Senegal) CV before he became the coach of Terenga Lions?

I think NFF will hire Spanish coach Domenec Torrent as new substantive coach for Super Eagles , cause he has pedigree and merit in coaching on the World football as he has been an assitant coach for Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, Bayern Munichen, Manchester City also he has coached Flamango , Galatasaray the Turkish club ; he knows about african mentality as he he has coached Kelechi Samuel Et’to , Yaya Toure at Barca in 2008-2009 season, Kelechi Iheancho and also Yaya Toure at Manchester City in 2015-2016 season.
Breaking News: The NFF has officially announced Emmanuel Amuneke as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
Congratulations to him.
The grapevine report of OwnGoal has been confirmed. CSN, oya, please update.
@ Adedeji Opeyemi, Does Amuneke have what it takes to say “ NO” to big Brown Envelopes from players and Agents? I doubt he has those kind of balls to say “ NO” to Big Fat Brown Envelopes from players and agents.
To succeed as a Nigeria coach, that person must have those big balls to say “ No” to Big brown envelopes from players and agents.
Local coaches focus too much on “ How Much Money” they can make now than “Building a Name” for themselves.
People like Coach Salisu Yusuf, Laden Bosso, Augustine Eguavoen and many mores are case studies.
If NFF wants to experiment with Emmanuel Amuneke that is fine but one thing for sure, Amuneke matter will be put to rest after few World Cup matches..
