Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu has urged the Flying Eagles to maintain the winning mentality ahead of their quarter finals game in the ongoing 2023 U-20 World Cup.
Shorunmu made this known on the backdrop of the team’s impressive 2-0 win over host nation, Argentina in the round of 16
Second-half goals from Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki saw the Flying Eagles cruising into the last eight in style at the expense of Argentina at the San Juan stadium.
The Coach Ladan Bosso’s side will now face Ecuador or Korea Republic in the quarter-final.
However, in a chat with Completesports.com, Shorunmu said that the Flying Eagles deserve their place in the quarter finals of the competition.
He also urged the Flying Eagles to maintain the winning mentality ahead of their next game.
“They deserve the victory. Beating the host, Argentina is not a joke and I am delighted with the way they approach the game.
“But then, the players must maintain this winning mentality in the quarter finals till the final because they have shown that they can make things work if underestimated.”

Kweshon time: Could Boss Bosso be Nigeria’s Belmadi? 🙂
@ Pompeii, I am already eyeing Bosso for the SE job if I must be honest with you. Bosso can be the head coach while a very reliable foreign assistant brought in to assist, especially one good at reading game progression as well as interpreting/nolifying tactical formations.
I have been really really impressed with the way Bosso n crew have nurtured this Flying eagles teams. He humbly took all criticism positively by dropping a good number of under-performing players and brought in re-enforcement. Looking at this team, you can see it’s not a usual danladi maigari, tijani Mohammad, abubakha bakari, Musa Musa etc team as before. This team truly represents. Kudos to Bosso and coaching crew. This team plays the typical Nigeria brand of football; physical, skill, speed, robustness and resilience. Bosso and crew has done well to identify these types of players for us; Daga at his young age looks really a solid defensive midfielder, Ogwuche, taribo like, Onadi , strong on the ball, such ball juggler we have been struggling to find, Eletu, small but solid and difficult to knock off the ball, Umeh reminds of powerful Aiyegbeni, then Fredrick, wow.. that boy just only needs to keep his head, he is sure going to get to the top and captain the SE n Aphylidegreat mentioned, truly brings young Keshi back to life.
THOSE GRITTY QUALITIES HIGHLIGHTED ABOVE, SHOULD BE NO. 1 CRITERIA USED IN IDENTIFYING PLAYERS TO BE INVITED TO ALL NATIONAL TEAM GOING FORWARD WITH WAIVER FOR TRULY EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS LIKE KANU/OKOCHA AND NOT NECESSARILY WHERE THESE PLAYERS PLAY WHICH LIKE I HAVE ALWAYS SAID , IS VERY DECEPTIVE. OSAYI SAMUEL IS A MOST RECENT EXAMPLE OF SUCH PLAYERS. OSIMENE IS ANOTHER. HOPEFULLY FEW OF THESE PLAYERS JOIN UP WITH OSIMENE, OSAYI AND OTHERS IN THE SE VERY SOON.
Well said my friend. What impresses me most is the way he set up the defense. The team defends as a unit. Everybody helping out the next man. I also like the high press.
While I’m not completely sure he’s ready for the top job, his results so far have been impressive. If he continues like this, I may also be inclined to give him a try. I suggest that he should be sent out for some refresher courses. That would be money well spent.
That’s me Pompei, lol.
Super Eagles bawo? Kudos to Ladan Bosso but to be kandid and very honest, I still cannot see his tactical input on his boys when it comes to the final third. I feel a he should have addressed this dark area after the afcon or the group games at this WC. I still see the boys shooting aimlessly in the final third when about 100% of the time there are better placed team mates but our boys decide to go for personal glory and end up playing aimless or weak shots towards the post.
They are physical, rugged, tireless, and tough as nail. Certainly very hard to play against by any team, but I don’t really see fluidity, a patterned build up or a certain silkiness to their play that’s signature of a typical talented Nigerian team and a la the Golden Eaglets. All the same, Bosso’s boys are getting the job done, so kudos to them. But still not totally sold on Bosso. Not 100% convinced.
Sometimes you get to know the real level of African football with these underage competitions. Africa use overage players and even struggle to beat real kids from other continent. African football is a real mess, even messy than African politics
@ur comment lacks merit and does not deserve a response from a sane fan.
@Four four two, please ignore the bloke named Badge or something above. He’s one of the many xenophobic, hate-filled, and provocative Ghanians that were all over the forum during and pre Fifa World Cup.
Only @Selfmade is a bit open-minded. The rest are envious nitwits always praying for the downfall of Nigerian teams and on the lookout for how to badmouth and play down their successes. There’s another notorious one called Fetch. Then Yaw etc.
Get well soon ghana man.
I must confess Bosso bought me over during the uder20 AFCON. I noticed the setup, fluidity and transitional play of the team from Defence to attack. It was owesome just like the Brazilian Coach and Masharano the Argentine coach has observed. The only thing the team was lacking then was talent in key areas. Being a Coach who like to listen he duly dropped some underperforming players and beef up the team with top talents; hence the result they are getting. Most of this players will easily translated to SE players in few years time. And I think Bosso too should be promoted to the SE to help set up the SE defence the way he is doing with the flying eagles
He has done very well indeed.
Bosso and his boys have done well, though I’m one of ur doubters, but u guys have done well. Daga, Fredericks I see u guys
Although Bosso may have lacked enough transparency and honesty in his selection for the AFCON, he has undoubtedly rectified that for this WC. The inclusion of Umeh, Nnamdu Eletu, and back-to-fitness of Daga, have greatly enhanced the team. This is the team that should have been chosen for the AFCON. I believe they have a strong chance of success. It’s surprising that the team, which finished 4th in Egypt, is now the last team standing among the contingent from the continent in Argentina.
They actually finished 3rd at the AFCON. In my opinion they were the best team at that AFCON, but unavailability of a lot of key players crippled the team. Yet they won 4 games and were compact defensively. That’s were I noticed there resoluteness.
It’s been long we had a team like this to be proud of and I will celebrate this moment. Any of Ecuador and South Korea is there for the taken. I think I’ll prefer the Koreans as they’re currently leading Ecuador. I think the FlyingEagles will be ready for any one of them. VAMOS ARRIBBA FlyingEagles!!!!
Because you think he was dishonest doesn’t make you right rather it’s just your assumption.
National team is work in progress.I believe every other team that went to Argentina shored up their team, you keep improving as you progress with your team by omission and additions especially in grey areas.
Meanwhile,we are quick to condemn coaches, most of yous in this platform are just looking for ways to justify your negative, vague and destructive criticism against a good coach who was just doing his job,now you are served a humble pie which you can’t eat out of shame instead you’re looking for ways to justify your earlier criticism to make it right, you think an unscrupulous coach would listen to your criticism and make the right calls? You must be kidding..
I couldn’t but help to go back and read some comments during the afcon-20. Some people are hypocrites. Now twisting their tongues and sing praises of the team. Couldn’t help to read some accusations levelled against Bosso. Many claimed money exchanged hands even when we asked for proof. Am shocked their ring leader Dr Dry has been quiet, who knows he probably is disguising using other names as usual. I know he can’t wait for this team to lose so he can come here and give a long epistle. Or like i advised him to go blow off his Tv from the first game. He probably is having some over spiced peanuts.
South Korea have edged Ecuador. So we are on a collision course.
What I don’t like about this is that we are the favourites on paper.
Our boys need to approach this game the same way they played Italy and Argentina. The Koreans are very dangerous when given time and space to operate. Ecuador paid dearly for allowing them free movement. The Koreans are also quite good at finishing. They are definitely better in that department than we are.
We need to stifle them, take time and space away from them, deny them goal scoring opportunities while taking any chances that come our way.
Again, if we play them the same way we played Italy and the Argies, we should be ok. But if we are complacent, make no mistake about it. The Koreans will show Nigeria the door out.
I share your view, Bro. The Koreans are very dangerous, far better than Equador. We should watch out for thst number 10. Too skilful and deadly for a striker. Then the number 7 too. We should not allow them time on the ball. I know they will try to motorize their play, to physically avoid us as much as possible, knowing how strong and skilful our boys are in duels but we will beat them to their game if Bosso gets his tactics right.
The 3 team from our group are through to the last 8 and May as well possibly be in the last 4, that tells you how strong that ground is, so Brazil and Italy should be ready for a return match hopefully we win our next match.
Reason I was shocked at the level of criticism against the team. It was a complex group and any of the three teams that emerged from the group could have easily top any other group. Sometimes, we need to be cautious when throwing flaks at our teams after a loss because in most cases, the situation might just be right to condemn them. Hopefully, we will beat Korea. I want a rematch agsinst Brazil.
Pls guys don’t underestimate SK those guys are very technical, clinical finishers , I would prefer we play Ecuador, but that’s too late now. Hopefully Tinubu regime will bring smiles to Nigerian faces .
