Former Ferrari team principal Luca di Montezemelo says Sebastian Vettel is still a high-quality driver despite his recent struggles. Last time at the Belgian Grand Prix, Vettel could only watch on as Charles Leclerc picked up Ferrari’s first win of the season.
Vettel was used to hold up Lewis Hamilton in order to allow Leclerc to build up a bigger lead and he eventually won the race by 26 seconds. Despite the fact Vettel is 12 points clear of Leclerc in the table, it has already been speculated that Leclerc could be made number one driver given his rapid rise and Vettel’s decline.

However, Di Montezemelo has rejected these suggestions and says the four time world champion still possesses a lot of quality. “Sebastian was crucial for the victory,” he said. “I think without Sebastian it was very difficult for Leclerc to win the race, very difficult, because Sebastian was able to hold back [Lewis] Hamilton for a few laps.
“Sebastian is for me still very, very good. I think the pair [of drivers] is very good. In the normal life, you have some moments with some difficulties. “But I am sure he has all the characteristics to come back. I hope very soon, and I hope in a few days.”
