Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy, believes Frank Lampard’s track record of improving young players could stand him in good stead for bossing the English national team one day.
Southgate has been impressive since taking over as the Three Lions manager.
In his first outing with the team he led them to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
He then guided them to the final of the just concluded European Championship where they lost to Italy on penalties.
His contract runs until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Cundy, who played for Chelsea from 1988 to 1992, has earmarked Lampard, who has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in January, as a potential replacement.
He told talkSPORT: “Right now, Southgate is the only man for the job. But if there is a change of manager after the World Cup and Frank is available…”

Cundy’s co-host Andy Goldstein interjected, saying: “Oh, shut up! What are you talking about?”
Cundy continued: “Bearing in mind what he did with those young players at Chelsea – don’t forget his record with young players is pretty good.”
Goldstein replied: “He left the Chelsea side in ninth, your manager [Thomas Tuchel] came in and won the Champions League and got top four with the same team.”
In his first job in management with Derby, Lampard worked with youngsters such as Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Jayden Bogle and Harry Wilson.
He then took the Chelsea job and reunited with Mount and Tomori, before giving more first-team opportunities to Tammy Abraham, Billy Gilmour, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James.
Cundy made a point that international management is completely different to bossing a club.
He said: “Southgate got Middlesbrough relegated, what does that prove?
“I’m saying in terms of what Frank has done as a manager in his infant years, it’s not as ridiculous as it sounds.
“Southgate hadn’t done anything as a manager [before England]. Being an international manager is very different from club football. Southgate has proven that, Joachim Low has proven that.”
Cundy and Goldstein were reacting to a call from Chelsea fan Jack, who insisted Lampard is a better manager than Southgate.
He said: “Frank Lampard would do a better job as England manager and getting the best out of these England players than Gareth Southgate is doing.
“Lampard will get better performances out of the players.
“Southgate’s first tournament in charge was the World Cup and the teams we played in that World Cup, you [Goldstein] could have got us to the semi-final.
“Frank Lampard is a better manager than Southgate because of what he’s achieved in his managerial career.”

Hmm you want what happened in chelsea to happen in the English team. Lampard with all due respect is not experienced enough to handle any top club side let alone a top National team such as England.
If they can say this or do this to Southgate that took English team to the final of the Euro 2020, what is Oga Rohr still doing with the Super Eagles?
“Southgate hadn’t done anything as a manager [before England]. Being an international manager is very different from club football. Southgate has proven that, Joachim Low has proven that.”
We should check ourselves. We want the best for ourselves but we don’t want to be honest with ourselves because of our selfishness.
A typical example of that is our president, Mr. Buhari.
Nigerians deserves the best but our president is not capable.
Super Eagles deserves the best but Amaju have sold us out and Oga Rohr is not capable.
1+1 of the United Kingdom equal to two but 1+1 of Nigeria is not equal to two. Why?
Because we are the problem of ourselves. Let’s fix ourselves first and see how things will be going well in Nigeria.
England deserves the best and Nigeria also deserves the best. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
What top clubside did Southgate handle before he took over England sir? Can you recall any team Joachim Low took charge of successfully before winning the WC with the Manschaft pls?
I insist again, with the quality available for selection in this England side, a better coach would have made 2018 WC final and won the Euros.
England bench was stronger than most teams that made the Euros Quater finals if we compare players.
Check out the bench and their performances for their respective clubs. It will be a shamelot if this generation of English players suffer the ‘Eriksson effect’;’another coach who wasted a brilliant generation of proven UCL winners and perennial semi finalists etc; Ferdinand, Campbell, Caragher, Neville brothers, Ashley Cole, Lampard, Scholes, Beckham, Andy Cole, Shearer, Owen, Gerrard, etc
Hmmm…So England didnt have “better” coaches and quality players when they crashed out of Euro 2000 in the group stage or didn’t qualify at all in 2008…? England didn’t have “better” coaches and quality players when they didn’t reach the final of any tournament for 55 years since 1966..?
Somebody comes out from no where and gets to WC semis and final of Euros (their 1st ever) back to back and then “better coaches” could have done better…? Biko what have the “better coaches” been doing since 1990 when England last played in the WC semis or since 1996 when England last played in the semis of the Euros…? Oh….maybe England has been using championship and league one players all that time.
Pls let the better coaches come o. We want to see them and what they can do….LMAOooo. Nigerians sure have a funny way of defining “better”…Lolz.
People should learn to appreciate other peoples’ hardwork and give honour to whom it is due. A dumb coach wouldn’t get to the WC semis and Euro finals back to back even with FIFPro XI players at his disposal. England has never been short of quality players for as long as I can remember. Why the better coaches never got to the semis and finals of major competitions back to back despite the quality they too had at their disposal beats inquiry.
Pls can deduce any common sense from what @ omo9ja posted. He will asked questions and still answer by himself.werey..
Southgate was manager of Middlesbrough from June 2006 until October 2009. He also managed the England under-21 team from 2013 to 2016, before becoming the England national team manager in 2016, succeeding Sam Allardyce. In his first tournament as England manager, the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Southgate became the third manager (after Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson) to reach a World Cup semi-final with the England team, which won him the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award. At UEFA Euro 2020, he became the first England manager to reach the final of a European Championship and to reach any major tournament final since 1966; England eventually lost to Italy in a penalty shootout.(courtesy Wikipedia)
So Southgate too is not good enough for England because he has not won tea cup, abi?
I laugh in Aztec.
Now, they want to put in a manager who almost dragged Chelsea into mid-table. At a point in his tenure, Chelsea were in danger of missing out of European football entirely. No Champions League or Europa League.
Lampard is ok as a coach, but how can anyone suggest that Southgate should be let go now, with all the progress England have made?
