Alex Iwobi has been on an incredible transformation at Everton in recent weeks. From someone who drew numerous critics before he’d even taken to a pitch in a match, now he’s one of the most important members of Frank Lampard’s squad.
It’s fair to say that it has taken Iwobi a long time to hit these heights following his switch to Merseyside in 2019. He recently said that playing in his natural position is a big help, but added to that has been the increased confidence he has been afforded.
It’s not only the Blues crowd that have sparked that, although the midfielder did remark on a moment in which he was applauded for a misplaced pass recently – with fans appreciating the idea behind his direct attack.
It’s not just belief from Frank Lampard either, with the new boss keen to play Iwobi in a more central role than he’s been used to at Goodison Park so far.

As comments in The Toffees’ latest programme prove, it’s the confidence of his Everton teammates that’s also key. They were asked who the most skilful player in the squad is, and one answer stuck out the most.
Anthony Gordon remarked: “Alex Iwobi. He’s very sharp and his combination play is very good. He does some crazy skills too!”
Meanwhile, Seamus Coleman admitted: “In training, he’s full of stepovers and Cruyff turns. He’s very difficult to get the ball off.”
Ben Godfrey simply put: “Alex Iwobi. It’s like street football!”
Mason Holgate said similar, commenting: “He’s got mad feet!”
For context, the Nigeria international himself was also asked for his opinion and he selected Demarai Gray – as did Asmir Begovic and Andros Townsend. The winger himself, meanwhile, returned the favour to Iwobi.
Iwobi should return to action for the Eagles when they take on Mexico and Ecuador in a double header friendly games.
