Cody Gakpo equaled legendary Netherlands striker Marco Van Basten’s European Championship feat in Tuesday’s round of 16 tie with Romania.
Gakpo opened the scoring in the 20th minute before setting up Donyell Malen for the second goal.
According to football facts and statistics outfit, OptaJohan on X, at 25 years 56 days old, Gakpo is the youngest Netherlands player to score and assist in a knockout match in a major tournament since Van Basten in the final of EURO 1988 (23 years, 238 days).
Gakpo has now scored three goals at the ongoing European Championship in Germany.
He scored one of the goals in the Netherlands’ 2-1 win against Poland.
Also, he was on target again as Netherlands lost 3-2 to Austria in their final group game.
