A Kylian Mbappe crucial penalty miss saw world champions and tournament favourites France, crash out of the Euro 2020 in the hands of Switzerland after both teams served up a thrilling encounter in Bucharest.
It is the first time in their history that Switzerland will win a penalty shootout after losing their three previous attempts.
France thought there were home and dry after a Karim Benzema double and a wonder goal from Paul Pogba, cancelled out Haris Seferovic’s first half opener to go 3-1 up.
Switzerland earlier had a chance to double their lead but Ricardo Rodriguez saw his penalty saved by Hugo Lloris.

Despite trailing by a two-goal margin, Switzerland did not allow their heads drop as they halved the deficit through Seferovic who grabbed his second of the game to make it 3-2 on 81 minutes.
Dinamo Zagreb’s Mario Gavranovic thought he had made himself the hero when he bungled an effort into the net but it was ruled out for offside.
Though he was not to be denied just seconds into injury time when he made it 3-3 following a superb through pass from Granit Xhaka.
Kingsley Coman almost sealed the game for France in the dying moments only to see his shot hit the bar with the game going into extra-time.
After both teams failed to find the winner the game went into penalties which saw Mbappe missing the decisive kick.

Let’s hope some idiot somewhere will not get the idea to off Mbappe after France’s elimination. Mbappe was the fall guy today. His poorly taken penalty was gratefully gathered by the Swiss goalminder Sommer, and that was all she wrote for the French. Au revoir Le Blues!
Those guys… Granit Xhaka and Haris Seferovic were part of Switzerland’s U-17 team in Nigeria 2009 that pipped us 1 – 0 to that World Cup title… Seferovic scored that goal against us and has been consistent for Switzerland ever since Nigeria 2009 launched him unto the world stage… He scored two headers yesterday… his goal against us in that U-17 also was a headed goal… I never forgot that name… Seferovic… he is a dangerman anyday!
Hi Jimmy,
See below for those wishing to take a trip down memory lane.

@Deo… great video. We must never forget to remember we lead Africa in causing ripples… at world football stage (Mexico ’83, China ’85, Canada’ 87, Saudi ’89, Atlanta’ 96) and we would have managed to be the first winners of U-20 (Netherland ’05) if a certain Lionel Messi was born a little earlier or later than when he actually did his grand entry into the world… as he would later become not only an enigma but also an anomaly in the world of football dominating it like no one before him… Ghana will go on in 2009 to pip us in that Category… and yes, what ball fans in Nigeria are chorussing out loud is that… we have a storied football culture… We may not be the very cream of the crop in elite world football yet… but we have a place in its circuit and we do have a reason to keep believing and dreaming… as dreams do actually come true if you keep the grand prize in focus always and go to work… I am just a bit wary if our toolshed has a good master craftman for the job we so desire to be done well!
Seferovic and Xhaka played this tournament. Most of our boys that played here are now “retired”. SMH.
Add these to your list too…..Mario Goetze, Benard Leno, Kevin Voland, Shkodran Mustafi, Lenart Thy, Marc Andre Terstergen, Neymar, Coutinho, Allison beker, Casemiro, Guilherme, Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa Gk), Nicolas Tagliafico, Balbuena, Bertrand Traore, Sergio Gomez, Isco, Morata, Iker Munian, Sergi Roberto, Pablo Sarabia, Koke, Borja.
Indeed, Jimbo. The Swiss are now reaping the benefits of their investment in grassroots football.
It’s funny though. Swiss guys that won the U-17 world cup are still around and waxing stronger 12 years later. Yet, some of our boys that won in 2013 and 2015 are nowhere to be found today. Tough to explain.
What about our Beijing 2008 “U23” team viz a viz Argentina’s team..?? Garay, Mascherano, Zabaleta, Gago, Banega, Lavezzi, Di Maria, Messi, Aguero, Romero…..more than half of the team still played or still playing at the top level. Apart from Ikechukwu Ezenwa, almost all of our own so-called U23s at that time have long disappeared from radar…..Its not tough to explain, we simply used 35+ year olds masquerading as U23s.
MRI scan was used for Nigeria 2009 U-17 World Cup. Umeruo, Onazi, Paul Danjuma, Edafe Egbedi, Ajagun, Ramon Azeez, Ganiyu Ogungbe are still conspicuously around… It’s easy to Google the names of the rest and see where they are… If we have a functioning professional league like Egypt or SA, we would still be able to follow most of them…
Hahahaha…..conspicuously around indeed…LMAO. conspicuously around playing at the top level in the top 5 leagues like their mates I listed up there right…? Their mates whom they played U17 with are at still at their peaks, still playing competitively and productively at the highest level of football, while they are already on the other side of their footballing career hill, 10 minutes to retirement….LMAO.
The same MRI cleared Fortune Chukuwdi only for Justice Amasiemeka to raise an alarm he signed the boy for Sharks feeders in 1999 as a 17 year old….LMAO. Chief Justice even showed us pictures as proof. The truth is that the use of MRI in the 2009 tournament was for pilot purposes, majorly experimental and just a test run to be perfected for future tournaments. It was after then grades and benchmarks were introduced. Many of our players for that tournament would have been disqualified if the metrics of now where used. They where given byes majorly because we were hosting and the team had already been decimated by the same MRI a few weeks earlier. Majority of them were already in their mid twenties. If Justice Amasiemeka hadnt cried out, we would be here still thinking Fortune Chukwudi too was truly an U17 player in 2009….LMAO.
I get your point… but you must know European players will always do better than their African counterparts because Europe has many good leagues open to players of European descent to play in… Whether we like it or not we must develop and improve our own home league… South Africans, Tunisians or Egyptians will not go to Europe to beg clubs, and sometimes slave and take all sorts of treatments just to play in Europe to earn good… We can basically count the number of players from those countries playing abroad… most of them don’t have the patience to go through what it takes… You often have players from those countries going abroad and often return back to their home league in less than 2 seasons time..
I hope oga Rohr is watching and learning so he can stop his defeatist mentality and crap like we need players in Real Madrid, Barcelona etc to be able to reach ordinary quarter final of the World Cup not to talk of winning it.
Name no dey play ball!
What you need is a well oiled team, well drilled and a tactical, confident coach to lead you to success simple.
Excuses wouldn’t help coach Rohr, he should better repent.
@Goal ⚽️…. Rohr is 100% correct regarding his statement about players playing in the top 5 teams in the world . I hope you’re aware that 90% of the swizz football players play in the top 5 league in the world. below is the reference .
national-football-teams.com/country/180/2021/Switzerland.html
So Yes Rohr is 100% correct regarding his statement and The French players lost due to their over confidence and hype .
The French team stopped pressing after the scores was 3-1 and they start loosing the ball carelessly .
So before finding a fault with Rohr’s comment , you should make research if his words are true or false
The FRENCH TEAM lost the tournament due to their over confidence and EGO ( SIMPLE AS ABC ) . An opening day win over Germany was followed by a below-par draw against Hungary and a 2-2 encounter with Portugal.

The number of dislike you got is a enough reply to your statement above .
The only thing I know here for sure is that Rohr and his worshippers are very good in making excuses which is far from wisdom or the knowledge of the game.
Have a good day my people.
Goal ⚽️ … Hahahaha very funny . The simple Question is does 90% of the Swiss national team play in top 5 European league ? YES OR NO
IF the answer is YES , then obviously you post is just based on emotions and nothing else .
Facts and Emotions doesn’t relate . You’ve to learn to base your argument on FACTS and not emotions .
In the Real world . Emotions is actually useless and baseless compared to FACTS
Until you’re able to tender your FACTS to backup your post, then your post is nothing but PURE EMOTIONS
Lmao!! They ask @Owngoal a simple question he’s here talking about dislikes. Who come get more likes than dislikes now? Lmao!! All in the name of trying to rob Rohr in the mud . Hatred and emotional sentiments will never allow some people to reason intellectually. It’s better to always do your research well before coming to ridicule yourself on a public forum.
In his archaic reasoning he thought all the Swiss players play in the Swiss league Lmao!! A team known as the United Nation of football. There’s hardly any region of the world that is not represented in the Swiss National team. That’s why they can stand toe to toe with any top team in the world and beat them. They beat Spain in the first match of the 2010 WorldCup before Spain went on to win the WorldCup. If I’m not mistaken I don’t think they’ve ever failed to make it out the group stage of every major tournaments they’ve participated in.
Hahahaha @Na me talk am. Awesome reply from you.
Simple Question: does 90% of the Swiss national team play in top 5 European league…??? Town crier is here talking about number of dislikes….LMAOooo…imagine the level of intellectual bankrupcy…LMAooo. Thats how they dodge and duck when you ask them to present facts….LMAO.
Oga @owngoal, you that has wisdom and knowledge of the game, kindly answer the question @ Na me talk am posed to you and stop beating about the bush…LMAO. People who want to win the world cup with players from 2nd division and those battling relegation….LMAO.
I guess you were initially thinking Switzerland are a bunch of riff raffs right…? See below for yourself the caliber of players they have and the clubs they play in. Pls dont get too shocked ehn….LMAOoo. Those are the quality of players any team must have to be able to stand toe to toe against teams like France, Germany, Italy or Spain.

@Dr.Drey… So you see it’s not all about Top 5 league from your detailed research above… You can see they picked players from their own Swiss league also… they also had a player from Dinamo Zagreb… Can you help us ask Rohr how far with our player at Dinamo Zagreb? Lol… Maybe coach Rohr is waiting for Iyayi Believe Atiemwen to transfer to Real Madrid before calling him up to Super Eagles… meanwhile, Ahmed Musa’s case is exceptional as someone who has already scored 4goals in previous world cups… even if @NPFL… I hear he is soon to be an Arab Contractor again… Hahahaha! Rohr and double standard be like embroidery thread and sowing needle… Lol.
Hehehehe…..Mr man, its all about Top 5 leagues….dont deceive yourself….LMAO…..otherwise teams like Hungary, Macedonia, Slovakia and Finland would have also made it to the last 8. If its not about the top 5 leagues…..Why didnt Switzerland pick all their players from the Swiss league….LMAOooo….or arent there 26 Switzerland citizens in the Swiss super league…? Arent there MANY TALENTS in the Swiss league like there are in your NPFL, yet the coach still went to the tournament with 22 (out of 26) players from the top 5 leagues…that’s an entire tournament squad on its own playing in the top 5 leagues. I am sure if the team were to be trimmed to 23, all 22 top 5 leagues players would still make the cut for obvious reasons.
Did you see how the Swiss were able to stand toe to toe and compete with France….? That’s because of their quality….quality players playing at the same competitive levels the French players are playing too. They weren’t playing in inferior leagues or at inferior levels. Look through the squad list yourself, over 80% of the team plays in the top 5 leagues and they are the best Switzerland have to offer in those positions….11 play in the German Bundesliga, players from clubs like Liverpool, Atalanta, Arsenal, Bordeaux…….that should tell every intelligent observer where the priority of the choice of players by their coach lies, and it is just fundamentally sensible that where there are no more options from the top 5, the coach augments by bringing the bar a step lower to the swiss league and Dinamo Zagreb….Fundamental reasoning….not rocket science. Otherwise if the Top 5 leagues does not matter, the coach would simply have picked all 26 players from the swiss league.
I dont even know why i am even expending energy explaining something this simple to understand to you. Even an illiterate knows that every coach will exhaust his selections options from the best leagues first before considering lower leagues. A simple case of balancing desirable-available and available-desirable. But ey…these things still look like Eulerian Algebra in the head of some people.
Now it is Iyayi Atiemwen you are singing again…LMAO….abeg how many strikers do you want Rohr to invite at a time…? LMAO. Without mentioning Iyayi I have already counted 9 in my head. have you ever heard the word “PECKING ORDER” before….? LMAO.
So we should ignore those ones who are playing at bigger and higher levels for Iyayi…..LMAO. So in your HEIRARCHY of Nigerian strikers, Iyayi should get an invite ahead of Osimhen, Iheanacho, Onuachu, Simy, Moffi, Sadiq or even Dessers..? LMAO. Clap for yourself…LMAO…..or maybe Rohr must start inviting 10-12 CFs to satisfy you.
Ahmed Musa has nothing to prove to anyone anymore, he is the captain of the SE, on the way to being the most capped Nigerian player ever, after holding the record of most goals scored in the world cup by a Nigerian, pls what does a 90+ caps, 4 world cup goals, 15 goals 15 assist winger have to prove to anyone…..nothing….absolutely nothing. If the names of players who need to prove themselves in a green shirt are being mentioned, Ahmed Musa’s name would never be part of the equation. Even if he is playing for Osun babes, he still wouldn’t need to prove anything to anyone. He’s just out there to enjoy his footballing career swansong and make lots of money, like every other veteran does.
Rohr has always stuck to his Top 5 leagues guns, he picks from the top 5 first before looking elsewhere. Its only that some people doesn’t understand something as basic and fundamental as “HEIRACHY OF CHOICE”.
Switzerland is in the last 8 of the euros today because they have quality players, playing in quality leagues than can match any of the other teams in the competition. Rohr or no Rohr, the day our own SE can boast of having 12 Bundesliga players and others from calibre of teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Atalanta, Bordeaux etc, then we can start dreaming of also making the semis of the world cup.
…no be who get players for top 5 league fo invite players from top 5 league? Do you want to tell me it’s more easier for a Nigeria player to play in Germany, Italy, France, England and Spain than players native to European Union Nations? The only thing I will keep telling you is that their is the factor of innate talent in chosen sport before the environment you find yourself… without the talent component one would be a nonstarter… what you like to do is mix up facts… I said… “football and teams isnt based on top 5 league alone” you listed players for Switzerland, I used your argument to draw your attention about Switzerland listing players from outside top 5 league also based on quality of those players and you went saying something else I don’t know… Lol. Imagine you… @Dr.Drey… Who said Ahmed Musa does not even need any club, does not need to be active to be called to play for Super Eagles… on this forum you have spit fire and brimstone and unsheath sword, daggers, machetes and Tomahawk to delete anyone who dares come against your views regarding Musa Ahmed’s unassailable position and spot in our national team… you now coming to again talk about top 5 shows your adepthedness in the game of “doublespeak”…. hahaha. Some of us here know you and coach Rohr for unparalleled double standard… Emmanuel Dennis is in a top 5 league now… let’s see how you and Master Rohr will continue to take turns to tie Ahmed Musa on the back with wrappers like African mothers do infant babies and drag him all over Super Eagles future get-together… When you finally are able to address the position and place of your Super-Nonplaying-Club-Hunting-Capatin objectively… hahaha, then come back and sing your usual top 5 league hymn you love hum! Lol… one love brother Drey!
Hahahahaha…..Ive also used your argument that top 5 leagues doesn’t matter to draw your attention to Switzerland naming TWENTY TWO…yea, 22 players from the top 5 leagues in their squad rather than 26 players from the swiss league. How that doesn’t arouse basic intelligence in you beats imagination…LMAO. Ask yourself once more why the Swiss coach named 22 players from the top 5 leagues in his tournament squad…..LMAO. He even named more players from the German Bundesliga than from the swiss league (thrice the number), You think the coach didnt know the place of “innate talent” before populating his team with players who are quality and talented enough to compete in quality and tough leagues like the top 5…?
Innate talent that cannot compete at the highest level is no talent. You know you are talented enough when you can compete with the best….a gold fish has no hiding place, that is why within the space of 2 years a Terem Moffi from Lithuanian league is now being courted by Borussia Dortmund. If you want to know if you are good, go and play with and against the best, If you want a confirmation and affirmation of your talent, go and lock horns with top rams. Those currently competing in the top 5 successfully are doing so because they are innately talented, and that is why they will remain premium choices in the hierarchy of selections for their national teams. And yes, having that glut of quality players playing for quality clubs in quality leagues is the reason the Swiss are where they are today and the likes of Finland and Hungary have long been sent packing, because having been developed by the quality and strength of where they ply their trade, they are able to stand toe to toe with their opposite numbers without being overwhelmed.
Football and every football team need the best quantum of quality it can muster…if all 23 players can come from the best leagues, then they get priority, the desirable isnt available, attention then shifts to the availables (from lower leagues)…..its not metaphysics…LMAOOoo….every nation selects its best from the best leagues first before filling the blank spaces with others. And the more of the best from the best leagues you have, the stronger your team both on paper and on the pitch.
People like Ahmed Musa have earned their position in the SE, whether any hater likes it or wants to commit suicide because of it….LMAO. I simply asked you up there, pls what do you want Musa to prove to you…or to anybody…..till now you are dancing atilogwu all over the place….90 caps, 4 world cup goals, 15 goals 15 assists as a winger (2nd highest ever for any SE winger), perennial big game player. This is in addition to the fact that he is currently the SE captain, a player who at a time was shuttling all our national teams (U20, U23, CHAN, SE) and never complained for once nor gave excuses not to honour call ups. I ask you again what does he have to prove to you or to anybody…..other than to just allow him the honour of earning his record 102 caps and bow out meritoriously.
The day your Emmanuel Dennis can boast of 4 world cup goals, then we will talk.
Player representation by countries of leagues – EURO 2020
1 — England — 151
2 — Germany — 91
3 — Italy — 75
4 — Spain — 42
5 — Russia — 32
6 — France — 30
And people who cant understand simple principles like “hierarchy of choice” claim Top 5 doesn’t matter….LMAOoooo. Top 5 does not matter but a Swiss coach who himself played and coached many years in the Swiss league lists 22 top 5 league players in his squad of 26….LMAOOooo.
That coach must be dumb….infact he doesn’t know football well enough to know that “…their is the factor of innate talent in chosen sport before the environment you find yourself….” LMAOOOoo
@Jimmyball pls when you become SE coach, pls ignore all our best legs in the top 5 leagues for players in Lativa, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Bangladesh because they are more “innately talented” than those who are grinding it every weekend with the best footballers on the globe. Top 5 leagues doesnt matter…..those playing there got there because they have handsome faces, not because of their talents. LMAoooo
Abeg DJ play me the next track biko…..LMAOOoo
Switzerland knock out mighty France, the world has not come to an end.if super eagles loses a match the fans will act as if that was their only source of livelihood.this is s big lesson to learn.
World champions,France leading Switzerland 3-1 at 80th minute. The Swiss rallied back to win the match. What do we call the French world cup winning coach now?, another PE Teacher? Football can be funny at times. Nigeria vs Sierra leone on my mind.
@Yen… On paper it was expected that France will beat Switzerland… but don’t forget sometimes when there isn’t so much clear difference in level of personnel between two teams… and by level here, I mean exposure and football education… a show of guts can often turn the tables against a supposed “big” team… Nigeria matching Sierra Leone doesn’t group in this category… Nigeria anyday, especially as can be deduced from the last matchup should be able to atleast beat Sierra Leone in Nigeria… Common! They rallied back from 4goals down… What was Rohr doing all the time after sensing the possibility of his foreign stars capitulating at home? Brother Rohr has zero game management skills… all the teams we used to beat are now kicking our asses!
How many teams were we beating before. Go and check the stats, we were not really winning away matches even in the days of yekinini and co.
What happened when Spain conceeded two goals against Croatia in the last 6 minutes.
Common let us be matured with our criticism. Yes rohr and the olayers should be blamed but it happens like that in football. What about games his changes have helped us to win matches. Common let’s be matured with our criticism.
@Jimmy if they say u ‘re a disgrace is an under statement. Pls what has Rohr done for u? instead of you to bury your head in shame you and your like still come here to say garbage. Had it been it was SE that lost a match to a team below them they way almighty France does yesterday this page would have been flooded with so many messages calling for Rohr head. You guys have not yet stopped crying over what happened in serialeone match till today. If you truly know what football is all about, you will know what happened in the two game yesterday is purely wonder of football..
@tayo… hahaha. Am I supposed to answer you? Well no one is saying I am a disgrace though… Lol. If I throw you softball now, you will start crying… I will wait for you again to say something else retarded, then ask you to use your middle finger to poke your own anus and sniff it… you will keep sniffing it till I am done watching two great Euro 2020 matches today, after which you can then beg if you should stop sniffing?… that you won’t ever look for my trouble again… Donkey!
I thought you said you do not use fowl words on your post. Disappointed!
@Anonymous… Go back to his post before mine and see him calling me a disgrace even though my comment to which he responded should not draw anyone’s ire… I respond to people like for like… If he came with an educated post I would have tried to explain myself… but since he felt I am a hater of his moongod coach which I am not, and he had to mudsling me… I owe him no civility in my reply.
Tayo you are a premature thinker. There are too many kids on this forum.
What happened yesterday? I think france was a bit over confident. The swiss team was very balanced at the middle. Akanji did an excellent job in netralising the very fast and light footed mbape.
The swiss team never sit deep rather they came all out against france and that alone boost their confidence.
Lesson
1. Until the end of the game never allow over confident to set in.
2.No team in the world will succeed against a very strong team if your mid field is not good.
3. Playing defensive game against a strong team will never guarantee a victory.
@Yinkus… I agree with you in totality. Well said… your surmission calls for an introspection of our own methods…
Everybody here is saying the same thing….All this factors contribute to Victory in football….The caliber of players (top5 league)…. Tactical approach(attacking minded play)…. Psychological approach (confidence of the players)… Super Eagles must possess all these ingredients to make an impact at the world stage and I think we are gradually getting there…..By next season we will be having at least 50 percent of our team in the top5 league….Rhor also need to manufacture an attacking pattern for us because we need to start scoring goals plenty….Rhor should also put confidence in this players,he should infect them with confidence and unleash them on opponents….Rhor should reduce his defensive approach to games Abit and give them the freedom to attack especially our fullbacks.
