Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith has claimed the silver medal in the 100m final at the World Championships in Doha. In doing so Asher-Smith has become the first British woman in 36 years to win an individual sprint medal at the World Championships, and she set a new British record in the process.
Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took the gold medal, her eighth world title, when clocking 10.71 seconds, while Asher-Smith came home in 10.83. Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou took bronze in 10.90. Britain’s Kathy Cook won bronze in Helsinki way back in 1983, and 23-year-old Asher-Smith could not hide her delight after emulating that achievement.
She now hopes this is only the beginning and has set her sights on bigger and better achievements. “I have worked so hard for these championships and hopefully I’ll go on to do even bigger things,” Asher-Smith told BBC Sport. “I’m really pleased to come away with a personal best and national record. That is more than you could ever ask for in a world final. “I was thinking on the line: this is your time to go.”
