Uncapped Sussex batsman Phil Salt has been called into England’s squad for Sunday’s one-off Twenty20 against Pakistan in Cardiff. The 22-year-old opener has been added to Eoin Morgan’s team due to the groin injury picked up by Dawid Malan during England’s unconvincing One Day International victory over Ireland in Dublin on Friday.

Salt has been rewarded after helping Sussex Sharks win four of their opening six matches in this season’s Royal London One-Day Cup, with an unbeaten 137 against Kent particularly catching the eye. The right-hander also starred in last year’s T20 Vitality Blast, playing a key role as his county reached the final of that competition, scoring over 300 runs in the process at a rate of 172.
Salt also spent time this winter playing in the Abu Dhabi T20 and Pakistan Super League and he will be hoping to get a chance to impress at Sophia Gardens on Sunday. England will get well acquainted with Pakistan over the coming weeks, as following Sunday’s T20, they will take on the same opposition in five ODIs prior to also meeting at this summer’s World Cup.
