Technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Augustine Eguavoen has revealed that the football house is currently in talks with Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro over a new contract.
Peseiro’s contract with the NFF ended at the end of June.
The Portuguese is willing to accept a pay cut to lead the Super Eagles to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
Eguavoen stated that the 63-year-old remains in charge of the three-time African champions despite the expiration of his contract.

“At the moment he is in charge, we are discussing in-house and we are giving him conditions as well,” Eguavoen told reporters at the end of FIFA Instructor’s Course held in Abuja.
“We are flexible, so it could be suitable for both sides and once we reach a common ground, why not?
“We would invite him and once we agree and we arrive at a common ground, we would be flexible and we also want him to be flexible with us.”
“Contract or no contract, he is a human being and he is still the coach of the national team as it is.”

LMFAO..
NFF are the BIGGEST FRAUDSTERS in HiSTORY..
They will make you a COACH without you SIGNING any CONTRACT…
LMFAO…
Peseiro now has the chance to prove himself. If indeed he signs a new contract, for me, he will be starting with a clean slate. Nigeria need to start strongly in the world cup qualifiers whilst also making a strong statement in the Afcon next year.
I hope they put a clause in his contract to be able to speedily relieve him of his services in the event of a lukewarm Afcon showing and underwhelming results in the first 2 world cup qualifiers.
Good luck to Peseiro.
Unserious fellows. They have no plans and no clue of what their are doing. Eguavoen statement has proven that the NFF has nothing in place for the Afcon and World Cup qualifiers.
I am appealing to the Nigeria government if we have one to desolve the current NFF this month.
If we don’t want a national disgrace, the Nigeria government has to get involved. Although FIFA doesn’t allow the government to interfere in sports but Nigeria case is different.
Can we imagine having Eguavoen among the NFF upon what he has done to our team during the Afcon in Cameroon?
Team selection wasn’t based on merit.
What Eguavoen is still doing there? Talking like is annoying kę. This country is ruined by these sets of people.
From up to the bottom, we don’t do things accordingly, and this is why Nigeria is very struggling as a nation.
Same story every year, NFF. Are you people not ashamed for once?
This is very frustrating, and nobody can do anything about it.
You are hiring a coach but the coach is not sure if he is going to lead the Super Eagles to Afcon and world cup qualifiers while Nigerians are waiting on what next and you are talking like this Eguavoen? It is a shame if you don’t know. I don’t expect too much from you, NFF.
It is very painful that every aspect of our system is corrupt and struggling with these sets of incompetent people. Fingers crossed. God bless Nigeria!!!
Fraudsters and criminals running Nigeria football this stupid egeuavon the day your chapter will be opened in Nigeria you will run
Who are these people giving the coach conditions? That coach doesn’t understand the mentality of Super Eagles despite the fact that he’s been there for one year. He can’t win the AFCON for Nigeria and we would not qualify for World Cup. The NFF should look inwards. Probably give the job to Amunike, Findi. These two men knew the boys very well and have the right qualifications to do a good job for Nigeria and in the process would save more money for the federation.
You can’t pay someone $50,000 without improvement in the team. His knowledge of football is already downgraded and that is why no Europe club would hire him. The ones that hired him weren’t satisfied and so, asked him to leave.
__ Is Peseiro The Right Man For D Job? __
The NFF are currently in negotiations with underwhelming coach Jose Peseiro who is currently out of contract after it expired in June.
Speaking to journalist recently, Technical Director of the NFF Austin Eguavoen said: ” At the moment Peseiro is still in charge of the team, we are discussing in-house (on his contract extension) and we are giving him conditions as well,” he stressed.
Peseiro now has the chance to prove himself.
If indeed he signs a new contract, for me, he will be starting with a clean slate. Although his first period in the job was chaotic with poor games-to-win ratio, he still managed to qualify Nigeria for the Afcon with games to spare.
His 4-4-2 formation with emphases of quick turnaround, just-in-time transition, one touch football and and all-out attacking philosophy are yet to deliver the goods across many levels which have left him being unpopular with a large base of Nigeria fans. But he has shown willingness to work with NFF’s chaotic way of running our football which is more than many high profile coaches out there will be willing to tolerate.
He works without being paid for months whilst kowtowing to their demands in player selections by incorporating homebase players. That said, Peseiro is popular with the foreign based players as many of them have lent their weight to his continuation as their coach.
I am all for Peseiro staying on until after the Afcon next year at the very least. But I admit that this position is not popular with the wider Super Eagles fanbase as his brand of football is not right up their street.
But I think the Portuguese gaffer should be given the chance to at least lead the team to the Afcon tournament he qualified them for. Every time we sacked coaches who qualified us for tournaments, it hadn’t gone well.
Omo said the right reality of NFF situation fruading , corruption, all these tow bad behaviours really ruin Nigeria football; I think if Egavouen has conditions on coach Peseiro to renew his contract it is not pay cut but you must put other technical conditions to do them for Super Eagles just like he must put a drastic and strong defensive style of play, choose excellent and quality players for this stint like: Alhassan Ibrahim,Anderson Esiti,Frank Onyedika, Daniel Daga, for shakky SE defensive side, you must dump or exclude shakky and weak players, in center back side he must recall strong and good players who can deal with set- pieces just like: Kalib Okoli, Tosin Adarabioyo, Ugoh Egbo, he must recall Tyronne Ebuehi cause he plays sliding football and he alway presses on the rival; on goalkeeping he must recall in form goalkeepers like: Sebestian Osigwe, Victor Sochima, Chijioze Aniagboso, SC Friebourg goalkeeper Atubolu; in attcking midfield he must recall reading star Ovie Ejaria so that he can be good substitute for Alex Iwobi and Joe Aribo; in attacking side he must recall Victor Boniface, Gift Orban, Sadiq Umar.NFF must put strong condition on Peseiro that he must deal with code of conduct on any recalled player that says” any recalled player must perform strongly with enzthusiasm with descipline , committment and dedication, so the recalled player must die for white and green jersy, if any player controvert this code of conduct he must be dump then exclude out of the team; so Peseiro must recall his players on merit and form in thier clubs not on emotion and reputation which have killed SE since a long time; so he can make overhaul on the team as passed coach Stephen Keshi had done before , then had won AFCON. Cup in South Africa 2013 with new strong and descipline and dedicated players.World Cup qualifier on the doors so NFF must not play with SE reputation, they must put an excellent plan with putting coach Pesiero on control and under thier eyes, coach like Pesiero has a weak and bad experience he might be assited by NFF so that he can success.
Lol. Na new team you want. Guy, na 5 months to afcon. Your coach will rather die than blood new faces to his expiring current lineup. You no read say many of the current spineless bunch want am to continue? How e go drop them again. Forget your dream and wake up. E no concern me again. Na their career and legacy dey at stake.
They are forcing the coach to accept a pay cut and they will still eat from the coach salary.
Only a clueless and incompetent coach will accept such terms and conditions. The coach is corrupt, NFF is corrupt, and Equavon is corrupt. Is surprise how we expect super eagles to do wonders in this kind of sporting environment.
I wonder why Equavon is not looking for pesiero job the same way he was looking for Rohr’s job. Clueless set of people.
I read somewhere that okocha have been appointed the new minister is sport for youth in the country… How true is this pls?
Eguavon is the one talking about pesiro contract! Can’t you guys see that supper eagles has failed already.
I know the NFF are a sham organization. Very incompetent bunch and only an act of God can make them get things right. However, I think Peseiro deserves to take the SuperEagles to the AFCON at least. We have WorldCup qualifiers in November therefore, there’s no time to waste time for now. After the AFCON if we like give the job to Bosso and Salisu na there wahala be that. At least Peseiro deserves the AFCON with these players.
No right thinking or serious coach would currently risk his reputation to coach SE now. Morocco pulled off a wonderful fairy tale with a coach appointed only 4 months to the last WC. Nigeria is cursed to progress backwards on current form so they are stuck with more-losses-than-wins coach. E no concern me again
Whatever we do after the AFCON doesn’t really matter because it will be over 2 years to the WorldCup. Anyone they give the job will have time before the 6 remaining WorldCup qualifiers in 2025.
Bro don’t compare Moroccan football to Nigerian football at this time. They already got everything set up for them before they pull the plug on Vahid. And the coach that took them to the WorldCup is way above an Eguavoen tactically and technically.
Everyone expects Peseiro not to win the AFCON which is understandable, but if by any chance he wins it I bet you story will change. That’s why it’s better start afresh after the AFCON. For now he deserves to lead the team to the AFCON. I think he’s the only coach that can manage the NFF shenanigans for now.
Not really a bad idea to still give Posseiro a few more months like untll afer the nations cup to remain in charge of super eagles coaching crew.
It would also be more important if the nff should try to spell it out so clearly to him the need to do a major shakeup within the twam to avoid excess seniority that is counter-productive to a team”s unity nd maximim strenght.
That should be done with serious urgency becaus ofthe glaring deficiencies in all but one department of the present squad.
The following players shoyld be invited based on current form nd need to beef up the team:
a) Goalkeepes: Sabastien Osigwe of Luzano, Ovie Otegheri of Arsenal,
b) Defenders: Tosun Aderabayo of Fulham, Ugoh Ogbu of Slavia Praha, Osho of Luon Town, Jordan Torunarigha of Gent, Victor Onyemaechi of Boavista/Porto
c) Midfielders: Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugges, Alhasan Yusuf of Royal Antwerp, Ovie Ejaria of Reading,
And ofcouse, in our attack, l think we need players like Gift Orban, Victor Boniface,
Oga, u never read say some foreign based players say make e continue? You con think say the guy go drop those wey dey root for am to continue. Forget it. The guy say e already get e team and the rest of us know say na wash. As for me, na to siddon look because the senior men national team will still be insane (doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result).
Afcon no far. Your guy no go lie lie experiment with e team again before then. So, stop dreaming of a fresh outlook for SE. We are stuck with this bunch of expiring old men claiming youth
Lolz. Hahaha.
I can agree with u Mr. Sly.
This super eagles coach sef.
But, atleast he should try to add a few of them like Ebuehi, Onyemaechi, Osigwe, Orban, Boniface, Onyedika,Torunarigha nd Ugoh Ogbu (Without pretence, the guy is a baller nd very fast too. Better tgan most over-hyped players).
Its jst about fixing the weak areas and using the best players.
Eguavoen again!!??, He will eventually suggest himself as the Super Eagles coach, and history will repeat itself. The NFF is so dumb and corrupt!
“Can Peseiro lift the Cup of Nations next year? No way. Would he be sacked next year? Yes. Why don’t we sack him and gain time?”
– Ade Ojiekere, Nations news article titled “Now, it is finished”, Saturday, July 15th, 2023.
Peseiro’s passion and belief will drive him to success but what we should be worried about is the condition that man Eguavoen and Co are forcing on him.
Reading in between the lines, that condition is, he must play ball with them in selection of players, most probably, accepting to allow a certain percentage of home based player.
And what these bunch of failures will always say is, Keshi won with home based but what their dead brains will always fail to understand and accept is, the long long period Keshi and even Westerhof had to work with the home based players; and despite that long long period of coaching only a tiny percentage of the lots still managed to make the grade. And Worst still, after eventually making the grade, how quickly they faded away into thin air as if they had to muster every single bit of life in them to make that grade and praying fervently for tournament to finish so they don’t pass out.
Now, WHY GO THROUGH ALL THAT STRESS, WHEN YOU ‘VE GOT LOADS WHO ARE READY AND BEGGING FOR Invite? ONLY FOOLS WILL DO THAT AND ITS BECOMING CLEARER BY THE DAY THAT THOSE IN GLASSHOUSE ARE SO DEAD IN THEIR BRAINS THAT IT’S JUST A WASTE BUILDING THAT GLASS HOUSE AS THEY STILL CAN’T SEE THROUGH.
May the Heavens never stop showering blessings upon you Glory.
This exactly is the point I have been making all this while.
They keep shouting Keshi used homebased, Keshi used homebase. Keshi was practically closed-camping NPFL players during that time. The players were leaving national team camps to honour league matches on weekends and back to camp again. We organized close to 7 grade A international matches executed by solely the homebased squad before he could build them to their peak and at their peak he was only able to select a handful of them and was never brave enough to feature more than 2 in the SE line ups.
I challenge anyone to go bring the results of the matches we played with 3 or more hombased players starting under Keshi and lets see how many we won. This was one of the factors that contributed to our non-qualification for the 2015 AFCON. At a time when the 2nd placed team in the group could qualify for AFCON, we placed 3rd in a group that had South Africa, Congo Brazzaville and Sudan.
By 2015 when Oliseh would take over, of that stock, only Oboabona was left.
Add the cost of close to 6 months camping, 7 international friendlies, bonuses and allowances and see if the NFF ever reaped the fruits of all that expenditure.
Some people just blurt out advocacy for homebased players as if they just walked into the SE under Keshi like a typical Europe based players would walk in and tie down a place in his first 2-3 games.
It would not be out of place to say Keshi’s homebased project ended up being a white Elephant project with all the money spent going down the drain with 2 years.
Amen and amen @ Dr Drey. Brother to come post comments here dey tire me ooo nowadays because it’s just seems Nigerians both Fans, ex internationals and FA personels, no want accept the real problem of Nigeria football.
Dem just want the coaches to win by Miracle. It’s just like sending a child to go buy somethings from Market on the condition the child must go with half the money needed and buy the whole market. NAIM BE SAY YOU WANT SEND THE CHILD TO GO THIEF NA THEN EVERYONE (FANS)GO COME SHOUT SAY THE CHILD NA THIEF, NA FAILURE, DEM WANT TEN HAGG, BROOS, GUADIOLA, MOSIMANE, LOL ZZZ… ETC TO COME SHOW SAY HE GO FIT GO DAT MARKET AND BUY THE THINGS WITH SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY. MAY GOD HELP US NIGERIANS KNOW HOW TO PUNCH THE REAL ENEMY INSTEAD OF IT’S SHADOWS.
With all due respect to the homebase players ,there is no way they should be a feature with the Eagles.
They simply don’t merit it. Not with a dilapidated stop gap league with clubs that has remain comatose on the continent.
The national team should be strictly base on merit. Earn your call up. I would never understand or appreciate this quote call for the homebase. We simply shooting ourself on the foot.
Even countries with better run leagues simply pick the best and we all know most of the best is in Europe. Brazil,Argentina, Even Morocco,Cameroon,Ghana,Senegal here in Africa are filled with players from Europe.
Likewise in Asia, Japan and South Korea are catching up with the Best cause majority of their national team now ply their trade in Europe where the best are.
Recently Jamaica is rising in the Concacaf zone cause they have the nucleus of their team in the Premiership.
So why must we be different?!
And as for those clamouring for a local coach, please please , with all respect, we should kill that call. They just don’t cut it. Not now. They should go out there and earn it. I would rather have a Pitso than an Amunike coaching the Eagles. And I say that with my full chest.
If we are giving Peseiro the job ,we should do it urgently and give him the freedom to do his job, from backroom staff to selection of players. Full freedom. If he fails he takes the brunt, if he succeeds, we all succeed.
Lastly, it is important we get a home ground that’s suitable and favourable to our players. I choose Uyo.
Brother @ Hush thanks for saying this but those bunch in the glass house will be telling themselves that you’re not a Nigerian to be thinking this way. Lol zzz,. That is just how sad and hopeless the situation is.
Bet me some home based players are better than some so called foreign based players but the problem is that they won’t invite good home based players rather they will invite the useless ones that’s the point
@Agbo max, please kindly forward name/videos of one such players. I personally will join to clamour for his invitation. And remember the claim ‘better talent’ is relative to opposition. You don’t just throw a supposing better talent into the deep end without haven proven himself especially at international level. Also you will need loads of time/matches to prove you are ready. That time/matches unfortunately the main stream SE don’t have hence CAF thought it wise to come up with CHAN.
Hahahahaha Glory. Wonderful reply.
Dont mind these wishful thinkers. He should forward the names and videos of those so-called better homebased players lets see who the fellow is better than and against what quality of opposition he was playing for his to be judged as such.
They think mediocres playing against their fellow mediocres is an accurate way to judge a player’s ability…..LMAOooo.
Or is the home-based player different from the ones we see struggling to assert themselves in CHAN and CAF’s club competitions….???
@Glory,Peseiro mustn’t accept conditions that will inhibit or restrain his plans for success with the super eagles.
The shout for dometic players inclusion is a very regressive press that will slow any progress the super eagles manager is trying to achieve, sad to say.
These ex internationals who should know better unfortunately, continue to flounder.
Our football authorities making wrong calls, people in public office ordinarily should know better but disappointingly schooled by regular football fans is worrying and this does not look good for our football going forward.
@Greenturf I am on same page with you. Strange that despite CAF providing a passage way for home based talents that is CHAN, OUR OWN will prefer to ignore that sensible route and rather choose to jeopardise the future of our football by conditioning the coach to select from home based irrespective of how damaging such action might result.
Its when they are not on the seat them will be clamouring for home-based players….when they are given the job even they wouldnt dare invite home-based players.
Eguavoen was given the SE job 2 months to the last AFCON, not 1 homebased player did he invite to the SE till he sank that ship.
Amuneke was added to the crew to add “tactical sagacity” according to picnic……LMAooo, and bail out our incompetent TD from his tactical bankrupcy…..not even he was able to prove the suitability of homebased players for a call up.
Some things are easier said than done. That’s the case for most of these noisemaking exinternationals. They’re all just playing politics of acceptance….the clamour homebased invitation is like a cheap way of scoring political points.
I could have stated better than@Glory and @Dr Drey
With all honesty and respect, there is no space for the homebase players in the current Super Eagles squad unless we are doing ourselves a disservice.
Currently ,most of these homebase players are only good enough for the Zambian ,Tanzanian, Sudanese, Libyan even Rwandan leagues. That’s sad. And these are the ones we want to play for the Super Eagles and we expect to do well! Come on now, let’s face reality.
I appreciate the effort the likes of Remo stars , Sporting Lagos are putting in , doing things properly but needless to say, the homefront is far from the glorious days of the Enyimbas, Julius Bergers, Ocean Boyz , Rangers, shooting stars, Kano pillars, Enugu Rangers, Dolphins et al who always put up a strong push in the continent. And this is in the 2000s.
Today, I worry when our mighty Enyimba faces Apr of Rwanda or Zanaco not to talk of Ah Ahli or Esperance.
We should do things the right way if we want to succeed. Life is never sustainable by handouts, one have to earn a right to appreciate it hence bring about improvement.
And like @Glory stated, if anyone can show us evidently, a homebase player currently good enough to wear the green and white, I would be the first to embrace him or them. After all, we are all Nigerians, we simply want the best .
I couldn’t have stated it better than @Glory and Dr Drey*
Thank God we still have sensible and right thinking forumites around. They are the reason I still come around ones in a while.
We are now having some Squads here with funny/strange names killing the good old days of this forum.
@Glory, @Dr drey, @Hush etc just wait for their responses, you people will nearly regret wasting your time to type all those sensible words.
“Don’t try to teach FOOLS, they’ll will make fun of your wise words”.
