Former Arsenal midfielder Edu could be set for a return to North London as the club’s new technical director. The Gunners have been on the lookout for a new man behind the scenes since the departure of Sven Mislintat in February and they have reportedly failed in their attempts to lure the likes of Marc Overmars and Monchi to the Emirates Stadium.
However, former midfielder Edu could now be in line to take up the position. The 40-year-old spent four years as an Arsenal player between 2001 and 2005, including forming part of the ‘Invincibles’ squad that went the entire 2003-04 Premier League season unbeaten.
The former Brazil international also has experience of working as a director of football, having held that position at Brazilian club Corinthians in the past. It also appears Edu has lined up his first potential signing for Arsenal in the form of Brazilian teenager Gabriel Martinelli, who currently plays for Ituano.
The 17-year-old forward, who can also operate on the wing, is highly rated in his homeland and Arsenal could see him as a gamble worth taking considering the success other Premier League clubs have had signing the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison from Brazilian clubs over recent seasons.
