Super Eagles and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has been nominated for the 2023 International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) Men’s World Best Player for 2023.
IFFHS unveiled Osimhen alongside 24 other nominees for the award on their website.
Notable names shortlisted for the award include Lionel Messi – who is the current recipient of the award – Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Antoine Griezman and Bukayo Saka.
Also included are Vinicius Junior, Mohamed Salah, Martin Odegaard, Harry Kane, Kevin De Bruyne and Jude Bellingham.
Osimhen was impressive for Napoli last season as he played a key role in helping them win the league title.
It was Napoli’s first title since the 1989/90 season when the late Argentina legend Diego Maradona led them to their second title in their history.
Osimhen finished top scorer after scoring 26 goals, becoming the first African to achieve the feat.
The 24-year was named Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) Serie A Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season.
He is in the running for the 2023 CAF Player of the Year award and will slug it out with Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi.

The IFFHS was the first to create the award for the World’s Best Player in 1988. Marco Van Basten (2) and Lothar Matthaus were the three winners (1988 to 1990) before former FIFA President Sepp Blatter asked IFFHS to give the award to FIFA to become FIFA World Player of the Year.
Since 2020, the IFFHS has decided to award again IFFHS World’s Player of the Year and in 2021, also added the IFFHS world’s Youth Player of the Year.

Osimhen Just Start Scoring again abeg Jare.. Make you no become another One Season Wonder biko. Enough Awards let us stop living on past glory and remember Football is all about consistency. You choose to stay in Napoli when Big clubs wanted you in the off season. so my guy suck it up and keep your head down and do wettin you know say you sabi do pass. Abeg.
I don’t like this thing of Nigerian Players and lack of longevity of late, let it not be our curse pls
@ Ugo Iwunze
I understand your worry about Osimhen but I definitely know he is going to start scoring again, statistically, he hasn’t done badly this season; 6 goals in 11matches is not a bad return for a player being injured.
Methinks, our players are doing well of recent; Iwobi,Lookman, Ndidi, Moffi, Boniface, Bassey etc. are showing steady improvement .
While it is ok to keep pushing them to keep sustaining their momentum, we should encourage them when they try..
Wishing Osimhen and our girls the best for tonight’s CAF awards.
He has gone 3 games without Scoring. It is worrisome and Unlike Osimhen under Spalletti. Injured or not Infact A player in Confidence like Osimhen under Spaletti will even come back stronger after injury. I am worried because I know he must have lost alot of Confidence because how he was robbed the MVP of Seria A last season and then betrayed by Napoli fans who show thier favoritism towards their white players Infact Italy as a whole yet they will be eliciting Kvara up and down imagine Osimhen went on a poor run of Form like Kvara did from March this year until his goals beginin8ng of this season Osimhen would have been crucified. You see I hate to think Osimhen Lost his head because of this because because of his passion and normally players with as much passion as Osimhen had for Napoli from when Gattuso signed him.until the racists tik top post will be more hurt than normal players. Osimhen is going through a period where he wants to leave Napoli his passion for the club has gone However we need to remind him that we want to be comparing him with Haaland like he should be.. so he needs to get his scoring boots on again. Players big players like him have standards to maintain this is world football you can quickly be become a Nicolas pope or Tammy Abraham’s if time is not taken. Although I am well aware that Osimhen level and potential is that of X factor and superior to the former.
Ps. 6 goals in 11 matches is a poor return for a player of Osimhen’s potential and standard Osimhen was supposed to be on a 15 goals in 11 matches as his trajectory last season suggested. He has allowed the Italians true colours get the better of him
@Ugo Iwunze
While I understand your worry, I feel it is too early. I mostly look at the general play and context. Arguabaly, 6goals in 11 might be a bad return for a player like Osimhen , but he got the goals. Every striker goes through dry spells but as they say class always finds its way back cause it is permanent. Haaland,Lewandowski had gone through patches this season too. It takes nothing from their all round play and worth.
And like I said, context matters. As you stated, this is not Spalleti anymore. He is now playing under his second coach in a short while. Besides, the whole team isn’t performing to the level expected. And not forgetting he just came back from injury.
For me,Osimhen would be fine. When the time comes for us to be really worried. I would join you.
But as I pointed out in earlier post; it is always good to keep them on their toes.
I wish him luck tonight
Seems you don’t know what the guy is facing in that racist club. His teammates are not helping him with quality passes. They’ve returned to factory settings of selfish game.
They either shoot at impossible angles or pass sideways or backwards when Osimhen is better placed to score. Even when he work his ass up to create scoring chances, they don’t utilize the chances and don’t bother to reciprocate.
So don’t be hash on Osimhen. Put him in a team like Arsenal maybe he won’t start scoring like the likes of Haaland and Mbappe. They’ve striker that is excellent in Aerial balls yet his teammates won’t put in a decent cross into the box for him. So how do you expect him to score at will putting all these factors into consideration.
Napoli don’t play to Osimhen strength and that’s the honest truth. Even last season, Kvaratskhelia often mess up chances that would have turn to goal for Osimhen all because of selfishness.
Check other top strikers doing well than our Golden boy currently. Their team are playing to their strikers strength. Abi u won tell me Lautaro reach Osimhen but he’s got quality wing backs putting in the balls for him. Dumfries and DiMarco. Likewise their midfielders.
Spalletti really did a good job because we must be honest Napoli players are average but he drilled them. So it won’t be easy for them to carry on with at that pace because they’re not spectacular except for few like our boy Osimhen. Kvara, Di-Lorenzo, Kim min jae now with Bayern and Anguissa who’s just above average
