On Sunday, Sem Steijn netted his twentieth Eredivisie goal of the season against Almere City. This means that Leon ten Voorde, much like last year, has once again found himself on the losing end of a wager placed with the attacking midfielder from FC Twente.
In a recent segment of De Ballen Verstand on Tubantia, Ten Voorde shared his thoughts after witnessing Steijn’s impressive milestone. “I predicted this during the winter break,” he remarked. “There are bets you’d rather not lose, but this one I take with all due affection.” While Steijn has been having a splendid season, he notably made no appearance in the preliminary selection for the national team yet again this past Friday. Ronald Koeman addressed this matter during his Sunday night appearance on NOS Studio Voetbal, prompting Ten Voorde to comment, “It’s quite odd that he says, ‘I knew I'd get a question about it, so I watched the game for that reason.’ It’s a bit peculiar. But they are definitely keeping an eye on him.”
Ten Voorde articulated his understanding regarding Steijn’s absence from the squad. “Koeman prefers to keep the group manageable. You could throw together a preliminary list of forty players, and Steijn would certainly be on it, but that’s a conscious choice made by Koeman,” he explained. “Considering the competition and where Steijn stands, it’s apparent that a call-up to Oranje might still be premature. He’s a bit like Wout Weghorst; he keeps improving with each game. Come this summer, I fully expect him to take a leap to a higher tier, and if he does that successfully, he’ll surely catch the eye of the Dutch national team.”
