San Diego FC Boosts Security Measures Following Disturbing Homophobic Chants; Is Chucky Lozano’s Absence a Game-Changer?
San Diego FC is ramping up security for Saturday's home fixture after a homophobic chant marred the club’s opener at Snapdragon Stadium earlier this month. Increased personnel will be visibly placed in pivotal areas, particularly near the goal box, for the 7:30 p.m. clash against Columbus Crew, the team announced on Thursday. The chant, a singular Spanish term, was directed at the opposing goalkeeper during goal kicks. "If people choose to disregard our requests, they’ll be ejected and face further repercussions," stated club CEO Tom Penn following Thursday's training session. "We have measures in place should things escalate, but I’m hopeful they won’t. I trust our supporters will uphold the values of our club." Moreover, FIFA’s three-step protocol will be engaged for all SDFC home games, allowing officials to suspend or terminate the match if the chant continues. This inappropriate chant overshadowed the final moments of SDFC's home opener on March 1 against St. Louis City SC, a match that ended in a goalless draw. Fans repeated the slur aimed at St. Louis' goalie, prompting several warnings. After the match, coach Mikey Varas expressed skepticism about whether those chanting were from La Frontera, the stadium's supporters' section. To eradicate this unsavoury chant, SDFC is implementing a broader strategy: pre-match emails to fans will reinforce the club's dedication to a welcoming atmosphere. Flyers stating “Aquí No/Not Here” will be distributed in cupholders ahead of Saturday's tie. Notable figures, including Penn, midfielder Anibal Godoy, Varas, and leaders from the supporters' union, will deliver messages championing unity and respect before the game. A banner denouncing the chant will also be prominently displayed. "It’s a chance to embody the values we hold dear in San Diego and beyond," Varas remarked. "We strive to promote respect, love, compassion, and the strength found in diversity. Recognising our shared humanity makes us a united team." As for the team's performance, San Diego is currently 2-0-1 following victories against LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, along with a draw against St. Louis. Meanwhile, Hirving “Chucky” Lozano remains sidelined with a leg injury, while defender Paddy McNair has been cleared to return after precautionary measures taken in the last match. - Resource: "https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/13/san-diego-fc-vows-increased-security-after-homophobic-chant-marred-home-opener/
