‘Enough Is Enough!’: SDFC Takes Bold Stand Against Discriminatory Chants at Home Matches

San Diego FC Takes a Stand on Discriminatory Chants

The inaugural home game for San Diego FC ended in a 0-0 stalemate against St. Louis, yet the day was marred by an unfortunate incident. A significant portion of the record crowd—34,506 strong, a seismic turnout for Snapdragon Stadium—engaged in a discriminatory chant targeting the visiting goalkeeper. In response, the club made it abundantly clear that such behaviour will no longer be tolerated.

“We’re unequivocal in our stance: Not Here. Aqui No,” stated Tom Penn, the CEO of SDFC. As they prepare for Saturday’s fixture against Columbus, the team plans to plaster the stadium with reminders and place information leaflets in each seat, unequivocally denouncing discriminatory language.

With most of the chanting emerging from behind the goals, the club will also enhance security in those high-risk zones, doubling the number of personnel to monitor and manage the atmosphere. “We’re boosting security by 100% in areas prone to such occurrences, ensuring everyone knows—this isn’t what we stand for,” Penn stated.

Should the crowd disregard the directive? “Those who persist will face expulsion and further repercussions. We’re prepared to ban repeat offenders from the stadium permanently. We intend to uphold that policy,” he affirmed.

This particular chant, which has sparked controversy in international football circles, has often characterised the support for Mexico’s national team. Penn recounted witnessing something similar during his tenure with LAFC, leading to anticipatory measures for SDFC’s opening match. “We knew it was a possibility, but until it occurred, we hoped for the best.”

With these measures in place, the overarching message to soccer enthusiasts in America’s Finest City is straightforward: “We want everyone to come with enthusiasm and fervour, but there’s no room for that divisive chant,” stressed Penn.

Echoing Penn’s sentiments, SDFC head coach Mikey Varas also highlighted the importance of inclusivity. “We’re advocates for respect, passion, tolerance, and diversity. We’re all part of one global family. Recognising that we’re essentially one team will undoubtedly lead to a more harmonious environment.”

Kicking off against the Crew at 7:30 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium promises to be a momentous occasion. Here’s hoping the spirits soar high without the shadows of intolerance.
