Decoding Conceição’s Philosophy: “It’s More Than Just Understanding Football!”

At the recent "Coimbra Football Congress 2025," Sergio Conceição shared some poignant insights, as reported by diretta.it.

On his decision to join Milan, he stated, "I wanted to compete in one of the strongest leagues in the world. Winning the Champions League is my dream and goal, which is why I chose my current club. I was aware of the challenges that lay ahead—taking charge of a team I didn't select, with little time for training, and the pressure to succeed. Yet, this is a historic club that allows me to draw closer to one of my career aspirations, having already achieved much in Portugal."

Reflecting on the modern game, he remarked, "These days, everyone fancies building from the back. I enjoy playing wide myself, but that requires players who can execute it. At Porto, I had a fantastic goalkeeper who made this possible, and I have the same at Milan as well."

Discussing the role of a coach, he added, "A coach must grasp more than just football. If your only knowledge is football, you’re missing the bigger picture. For a time in my life, I needed to support my family financially, so I lent my hand to help a cousin sell produce at the market. Though I was quiet by nature, that experience shaped me into who I am today. Live life with passion and cherish every moment of your journey."
