Conceicao: “I Want the Champions League, That’s Why I Chose Milan”
The current manager of AC Milan, Sergio Conceicao, recently shared his thoughts at the "Coimbra Football Congress 2025" held in Portugal, shedding light on his coaching journey and the decision to take the reins at the Rossoneri midway through the season. His remarks were reported by Diretta.
THE CHOICE OF MILAN
“I aspired to join one of the strongest leagues in the world. My dream and objective is to win the Champions League, and that’s the reason I chose my current club,” he said.
THE CHALLENGES AHEAD
Conceicao acknowledged the hurdles he faced, saying, “I was aware of the challenges that awaited me, stepping into a situation where I didn’t choose the team, had no time for training, and there was an obligation to win. Nonetheless, it’s a historic club that offers me the chance to edge closer to one of my career goals, especially after achieving so much in Portugal.”
BUILDING FROM THE BACK
“These days, everyone wants to play from the back. I enjoy width in play, but we need players who can execute that. At Porto, I had an exceptional goalkeeper who made it feasible; thankfully, I have a solid one at Milan as well.”
FEBRUARY’S STRUGGLE
Reflecting on a tough month, he remarked, “In February, we played nine matches within thirty days. The lack of training time made it incredibly difficult to instil my identity in the team. After clinching the Supercoppa against Inter, we drew with Cagliari due to an individual error—it happens. Since then, names of new managers have continuously floated around the club.”
MORE THAN JUST FOOTBALL
“A manager must understand more than just football. If your knowledge is limited to that, you know nothing. There was a time when I had to support my family financially, helping a cousin sell goods at the market. I was shy, but those experiences shaped who I am today. Live life passionately and cherish every chapter of your journey,” he advised.
