Galo Sets New Record in Série A: The Unbeaten Streak Continues
Atlético Mineiro, affectionately known as Galo, showcased their prowess by thrashing América by a resounding 4-0 in the first leg of the Mineiro final, as captured in the stunning image by Alexandre Guzanshe.
Now, the club stands as the only side in Brazil's Série A with the longest unbeaten run, taking over this honour from Vitória, who fell to Náutico with a 2-0 defeat in Salvador on March 12th. This loss ended Vitória's commendable streak of 22 matches without a defeat, encompassing 14 wins and eight draws since November 9, 2024.
This remarkable journey of Atlético began with a setback on December 4, 2024, when they lost to Vasco 2-0 in the away leg of the Brasileiro. Following this, they sealed their Série A status by defeating Athletico-PR 1-0, relegating their rivals to the second tier.
Entering 2025, the team’s form was under a bit of a cloud, having drawn both pre-season friendlies against Cruzeiro and Orlando City, plus the first four matches in the Mineiro Championship against Aymorés, Democrata-GV, Pouso Alegre, and América. In those four games, the under-20 squad made appearances.
However, the confidence returned as Atlético clinched four victories in the initial phase of the state competition, including a 2-0 victory over local rivals Cruzeiro. They triumphed against Tombense in the semi-finals (winning both legs by 2-0) and then delivered a commanding 4-0 win over América in the final's first leg.
In the Copa do Brasil, Atlético faced Tocantinópolis, winning 2-0, and Manaus, whom they defeated 4-1 in the subsequent round. The team has netted 23 goals this season, with Hulk contributing eight before suffering a thigh injury. Rony, who arrived from Palmeiras for R$ 36 million, has made a mark as well with four goals from five appearances. Goalkeeper Everson has only conceded two goals in ten outings.
As we look at the broader picture, Atlético and Internacional remain the only unbeaten clubs in 2025. In official matches, Atlético boasts nine wins and four draws, while Internacional shares the same number of wins but has two fewer draws.
In terms of match count, Corinthians and Vitória have played the most with 18 fixtures each, while Cruzeiro, having been eliminated in the Mineiro semi-finals, has only taken part in ten matches across competitions this year.
