The Atlético Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo, has recently expressed his discontent regarding the contentious role of VAR in football, particularly after a decision that dashed the club's aspirations in the Champions League. “Up until Wednesday afternoon, we were ready to take on three competitions: the Champions League, Copa del Rey, and La Liga,” he stated. “However, an unfortunate incident involving that dreadful tool, VAR, has robbed us of one of our greatest hopes.”
Cerezo didn’t hold back in an interview with Telemundo Deportes, addressing what he perceives as an injustice stemming from video assistant referee interventions. “I’ve never been a fan of VAR, and it's not something I’ve just started saying. The other day’s mistake isn’t the reason for my disapproval. Instead, I see VAR as a divisive tool, one that lacks reliability. While many believe it was introduced to make football fairer, I think it has done the opposite, leading to more issues and increased criticism of referees.”
Looking ahead, Cerezo intends to shift focus towards future challenges but confirmed that action will be taken regarding the situation. “They need to be reassured. We possess a fantastic team, and we mustn’t dwell on what happened on Wednesday. Our sights are firmly set on the match this coming Sunday at 9 PM in our stadium against Barcelona, which is crucial for our league campaign.”
