Andreas Christensen didn’t waste much time in issuing a sly dig at his former Chelsea team-mate David Luiz, when he left Chelsea for London rivals Arsenal before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
In one of the surprise transfers of the summer window, the 32-year-old Brazilian defender was given the green light to be reunited with his former Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery at the Emirates Stadium, with Chelsea picking up an £8million fee.
Luiz has made almost 250 appearances across two spells at Stamford Bridge and has won the Premier League, Champions League, two FA Cups and two Europa League titles with the club.
But, despite the Blues being unable to strengthen their ranks this summer and next January because of a transfer ban, new boss Frank Lampard let one of his most experienced campaigners to depart.
Lampard dismissed claims there had been a falling out between the pair ahead of Luiz’s move to the Gunners, but Christensen’s post on social media after the deal was finalised suggested there was some bad feeling.
The Denmark international posted a picture of himself and his ex-team mate above the caption, ‘No player is bigger than the club.’
Ironically, Christensen is likely to be one of the players who will benefit from Luiz’s departure as he is likely to become a regular in the centre of defence.
Lampard also has Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori, while Antonio Rudiger is working his towards full fitness following a knee injury.
However, the 4-0 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday in their opening Premier League game of the new season suggests Luiz’s departure could have hit the Blues harder than they think.
