With two minutes left Reece James was shown a straight red card.
Former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck got a consolidation goal for Brighton in the 97th minute.
In another Premier League game, Manchester United bounced back from the weekend loss to Arsenal by defeating Newcastle United 3-2.
