Barcelona will be without Luis Suarez until September after the club confirmed the forward has picked up a calf injury. Uruguay international Suarez started Barcelona’s shock 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao in their opening game of the new La Liga season on Friday but he only lasted 37 minutes after complaining of tightness in his calf.
The 32-year-old was replaced by Brazilian Rafinha and sent for tests, which have come back confirming the former Liverpool star has an issue with the soleus area in his right leg.
It is now expected the Catalans, who are aiming to win the title for the third straight season, will be without Suarez for the next couple of weeks, ruling him out of the league games against Real Betis and Osasuna.
The latest injury comes as another blow to head coach Ernesto Valverde, who was without injured captain Lionel Messi for that defeat at the San Mames Stadium.
