For the umpteenth time, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have once again snubbed Nigerian referees from officiating in the fast approaching 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Recall that Nigerian referees have faced challenges in gaining recognition from both CAF and FIFA in recent years, and this trend will continue at the upcoming tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.
CAF has selected officials from 19 different nationalities for the event, with Egypt and Morocco having three representatives each, and Algeria, Gabon, and Mauritania having two each.

The 2023 AFCON finals are scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024, with the Super Eagles drawn in Group A alongside hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
At the 2019 edition in Egypt which had 26 referees and 31 assistants, no Nigerian referee was selected but Abel Baba made his cut as assistant referee in the 2017 edition while Peter Edibe was on the list at the 2015 and 2013 editions.
In the last six editions, only three Nigerians have made the list, which speaks volume of how little Nigerian referees count when it comes to reckoning with them for continental duties.

Even Nigeria’s home-based referees are just as poor as the home-based footballers. Something is wrong with this Country!!!
If there was a way to market these referees with the national team, our exes would have clamored for all our national team games to be henceforth officiated my Nigerian referees…..LMAOoo
Hahaha… Don’t mind those guys brodaman Dr Drey. They are having serious groove in a fools paradise. Homebased NI homebased ko.
Hahahahaha…..Coachee an his bunch of jesters….come and make a case for your “homebased” referees o.
They too cannot seem to “qualify” for continental tournaments like their brothers in the coaching and playing fields from the home front….LMAOoo
What is this nonentity saying. Even when the league was good, how many Nigerian refs were considered for major tournaments. Fool that doesn’t even know what the requirement for selection is would not come here and be calling out names. Abeg no come up with lies about what the criteria is for selection. If selection is based on league performance, definitely you wouldn’t say the Gabonese or Mauritania league is better than ours. Let them make the criteria for selection open

Ko ni ye o laye. Won o ni jere e.
With renewed efforts made to reinvent and revive the NPFL league in recent months, it would be a massive boost to the league to see one or two outfield players invited for the Super Eagles list ahead of the AFCON tournament.
In a premier league comprising 20 clubs as well as a second tier football club, it is rather absurd and strange that our senior national team coach, JP finds it impossible to get any player fit enough to make a provisional squad for the biennial tournament.

The situation is really deplorable.
Nigeria, one of the most successful football brands in Africa cannot boast of just one credible referee for the Afcon. I had a look and saw match officials Chad, Benin, Kenya, Lesotho, Djibouti and Angola.
Is that how incompetent and corrupt our referees are?

They are so corrupt. They see green, they say it’s black.
Na you offer them the bribe? Make CAF bring proof that they corrupt
