Burnley have turned down a season-long loan offer from Bundesliga side Schalke for defender Ben Gibson. Gibson joined the Clarets from Middlesbrough last summer but struggled to establish himself in the top flight, making only one appearance all season in the 5-1 loss to Everton, although he did score in the match.

The form of James Tarkowski and Ben Mee, plus a plethora of injury niggles, meant Gibson did not get much of a look-in and now his future at the club is in doubt. The lack of appearances has led other clubs to try and coax him away from Turf Moor, but Burnley are holding out for a permanent deal rather than a loan.
Last month, Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas had a loan offer turned down and now the same has happened to Schalke. Schalke have already raided the English market this summer after signing Jonjoe Kenny on loan from Everton.
