British duo Heather Watson and Katie Swan progressed to the second round of French Open qualifying with victories on Wednesday.
Watson, now down at 113 in the world rankings from a high of 38 four years ago, has never made it past the second round at Roland Garros but moved closer to the main draw with a three-set triumph over Bibiane Schoofs.
She beat the Netherlands player 6-2 4-6 6-4 and will next face Greece’s Valentini Grammatikopoulou, who beat 21-year-old Australian Kimberly Birrell in three sets.

Swan, whose first foray in a Grand Slam main draw came at Wimbledon in 2016, looked impressive when easing past second seed Jil Teichmann 6-4 6-2.
Having downed the Swiss, the 20-year-old Bristolian, who reached round two at SW19 in 2018, will now square off with China’s Wang Xiyu in round two after the Far East player beat Danielle Lao of the USA 6-1 6-1.
