Former Super Eagles Technical Adviser Bonfrere Jo has advised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint Emmanuel Amuneke as the coach of the senior national team after the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract.
The Dutch tactician made this known in an interview with Voice of Nigeria (VON), where he stated that the former Golden Eaglets coach has strong mentality, discipline and technical savvy to achieve results.
However, Amuneke, who is one of the coaches favoured to take over from Peseiro confirmed he has already applied for the job.
But then, Bonfrere believes Amuneke has what it takes to lead the Super Eagles.

“Yes, I agree Nigeria needs a local coach at the moment. Not a foreigner,” Bonfrere told VON.
“But the country will have everything to gain if the authorities appoint Emmanuel Amuneke for the job. I know him very well.
“He has a very strong mentality. He has the discipline and technical savvy to achieve results. In fact, if the Federation calls me to provide technical backup to Amuneke, I will gladly accept the task.” He added during the interview.
As for Emmanuel Amuneke, he was part of the first set of the golden generation of Nigerian footballers. He scored two goals in four games during the 1994 World Cup.
After having a very successful football career as a player, he ventured into coaching around 2008. His greatest achievement as a coach was when the 53-year-old tactician led the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria which featured Victor Osimhen, to win the 2015 FIFA World Cup.

So Amuneke is your Meal ticket Okwa ya.. No way after You said Quote ” If Amuneke calls you” I knew it was a planned Interview…. Na wa o
And it looks like CSN is the main media house Amuneke is using to force himself on Nigerians. Everyday Amuneke this, Amuneke that…even though he’s the most under qualified and inactive coach in Nigeria. We don’t want him!!!
I have a feeling Amuneke is NFF/Gusau’s anointed candidate (He’ll be cheaper compared to Mosimane or other foreign coaches) and all these calls for interviews etc are only a formality. Bonfrere will probably make himself available as an unpaid Technical Adviser – Just like the structure we had in those days of Weesterhof/Bonfrere.
Bonfrere was his coach at Atlanta 96. He was also there at Tunisia 94 and USA 94. He knows all the boys. Amuneke is an unassuming genius, so most people tend to underestimate and disrespect him or try to rubbish his achievements by exaggerating and judging him with any insignificant blips that lasted less than a month.
NFF could offer him a year-long contract and tie it to the WC qualification. Let’s see if the songs of some people will change after that. Paseiro has already started the WCQ on a bad note, but hopefully, Amuneke/Finidi/Enyeama/Bonfrere will clean it up by June.
Bonfrere Jo is 80 years old now. That’s the technical adviser you want for Nigeria?
Complete sport…we don’t want Amuneke, Stop shoving him down our throat….Ori yin buru ni
Get amuneke Emmanuel ASAP let us see him with these friendly matches first hand, let us observe him before he signs the contract… or if the Nff is as confused as ever and as usually so, then they should appoint finidi ASAP let him audition with these friendly games. my own opinion is that based on continuity, get amuneke and finidi as head coach and assistant respectively. No time for jamboree applications and searching up and down when a serious Nff should remember that June is coming fast. Amuneke as head coach, finidi as assistant, enyeama as goalkeeper coach, Bonfrere Jo as backup background technical expertise. I feel it strongly it is Emmanuel Amuneke time to shine.. his beautiful football got fifa asking him to explain his tactics at u17 World Cup, he has matured enough.. finidi will be very important assistants to take over later in future..
See your Mouth Like “Bring in Amuneke sharp sharp let us see him with these friendlies” to come and do what if I May ask?.. then after we will start to see 6 NPFL players in the team maybe by the time Players like Bassey Lookman Tella, And co start being Overlooked because we have to see NPFL in the team your eye go clear. Amuneke and any other Nigerian team will destabilise a team of players that have cohesion now with some key players coming back from Injury and our players doing well all over Europe we need only the best legs an Indigenous coach will heed to the constant call of NPFL players in SE by Crooks in NPFL ex internationals and other cohorts we do not need sabotaging and negligeance now. PERIOD
MtcheeeeW!!!!! NIGERIANS una no dey hear word oooooooooooo
U don’t know football…. no need using some language for you… get amuneke and finidi now…
Ugo is right! @Bestsport I’m assuming you’re joking with your comment. Any local coach would dance to NFF’s music.
This is one of the reasons why Amuneke is classless. Amuneke the serial failure has no record to back his resume other than using media and all sorts of Gbajue motives.
Lost a starstudded flying Eagles to an unrated team
As an assistant coach SiasiaEguavoen, his antics and divisible mindset created confusion and the super eagles lost qualifying tickets on both occasions.
Demoted to feeders team by an African club.
Less than 20% winning ratio in all coaching career with senior teams across national teams and clubsides
No sane organization will consider Amuneke for the Super Eagles position.
He should go handle Hearland or Abia Warriors, win the local league, then apply to coach the CHAN team.
No amount of publicity will clean his woeful records and classless behavior.
NFF ONIGBESE, just weeks after the Afcon, our football is in turmoil once again.
The coach that led us to Afcon silver medal is gone. Otilo.
Reason? NFF penny pinching.
No money, no money, no money. When will there ever be money?
Where is the $4m Afcon prize money? Abi dat money don die for aza? So quickly?
Unverified reports say Peseiro was paid off with $850k. Where is the remaining $3.15m?????
Ok now, hire a new coach. Mago mago don start again. Skullduggery, jiggery pokery, hanky panky is once again on full display.
World cup qualifiers will soon be upon us, and our house as usual is in total disarray. Mistakes of the past are being repeated again!
SA must be rubbing their hands with glee. With Nigeria in disarray, the world cup ticket is there for the taking.
A simple question!
Finidi: within a year took Enyimba to its best performance in 10yrs. Winning the league.contributed to the national team’s best outing and highest rating in a decade. Never rocked the boat and at no time created divisive attitudes in the team. A complete gentleman with great mindset. Still active and
leading his club to the top of the league.
Amyneke: nothing to show for his coaching career since he won the U-17.
Lost an U-20 qualifier ticket with star-studded team to an unrated team
He has never spent a year coaching or
assisting a senior team. This reveals his technical and mental deficiencies.
Got opportunities to be assistant to Sia1 and Cerez. Both coaches had t
heir lowest coaching career moment
during this period. According to reports, his delusional and over ambitious mindsets created confusion and divisive structure in the team.
Rejected offer to assist Rohr cuz he felt he was better and we saw how it went with his career. Git demoted to feeders team and has been clubless for more than a year.
If the nff insists on a local coach even though is a suicidal thought, Finidi has proven that he is aamong the top 3 local coaches around, continuity and his relationship with the team should help him integrate quickly.
Amuneke is not even among the top 20 local coaches because most of the nfl coaches are better than him at the momement. When you add award winning coaches with European sides experience like Egbo, and Olise then you know Amuneke na baby coach.
An Indigenous Nigerian coach can only take us as far as his throat. If he have longer throat it is game up and game Over for Super Eagles..
Dont say I did not warn you Indigenous Coach Clamourer’s
Siasia please, once his ban is lifted in June. He plays advanced Nigerian brand of attacking wing football. Meanwhile Finidi can hold on as an interim coach. Siasia please
@Emma Ariahu Infact out of all Living Ex Internationals this coach is the only coach I will advocate for when Siasia is coach he selects on merit that I will give him I never once felt that this player should not be there or where is this player he should be there with any of Siasia team list.
And that is what many Nigerians don’t realise especially with this current crop of players if a coach selects on merit it is really not rocket science that is half the work done, you don’t really need to be pep guardiola to coach Nigeria’s Best Squad today you can be an Average coach and you will succeed just cut out all the outside noise and select the best legs
Please forget amunike. World cup Qualification is serious business. South Africa coach is competent and has a group of players that are hungry to qualify for world cup. If we appoint amunike as our coach we should forget next world cup. We may not earn any point again. Nff, nff, nff malam gusau please dont toy or play with our wold cup qualifiers. If we are serious about taking our football to another level get a competent foreign coach and findi goerge to work together. Engaged the ministry of sport and our football loving president to assist the super eagles. The Nigerian national team is bigger than all these serial failures. A wise man never make the same mistake twice mr gusau.
THE BEST SUPER EAGLES COACHING CREW FOR NOW
1.Emmanuel Amuneke (Head Coach)
2.Finidi George (First Assistant Coach)
3.Daniel Amokachi (Second Assistant Coach)
4.Michael Nssien (Physical Trainer)
5.Ndubuisi Egbo(Assistant Coach/Goalkeepers trainer)
6.Vincent Enyeama (Goalkeepers Trainer)
By virtue of what Emerson Fae(Cote D’Ivoire),Rigobert Song (Cameroon) and Aliou Cisse (Senegal) achieved with their National Teams, the NFF need not look further. Ex -internationals can handle the Super Eagles and will earn their respect from the players.
Augustine Eguavoen,Sunday Oliseh,Samson Siasia, Sylvanus Okpala,Peter Rufai,Mutiu Adepoju,Friday Ekpo,Emeka Ezeugo,Henry Nwosu,Paul Aigbogun,Issa Ladan Bosso,Stanley Eguma,Gbenga Ogunbote,Fidelis Ilechukwu,Manu Garba,Salisu Yusuf, Monday Odigie,John Utaka, Joseph Akpala, Nduka Ugbade,Kennedy Boboye,Imama Amapakabo, even Mike Emenalo are the other options but Emmanuel Amuneke remains our best bet for now due to his business-like and no-nonsense approach. At least, nobody can accuse him of corruption or favouritism in his coaching career. He is also a good manager of men with the required temperament to operate at the top level. He has played at the highest level (World Cup,AFCON, Zamalek SC ,FC Barcelona,Sporting Lisbon, etc) won the Nations Cup,Olympic Football Gold ,African Footballer of the Year. He knows most of the current Super Eagles players (Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Iheanacho,Kelechi Nwakali, etc). As a coach ,he has tinkered the Golden Eaglets to the FiFA U17 World Cup title , qualified Tanzania to the AFCON,managed teams in Zambia and Egypt. The players are bound to respect him. Give us Amuneke now. Time is running out.
No matter their tricks are, Amunike is ahead of them all. If Oga Paseiro, who had no experience, could be hired by the NFF, I think NFF has no choice but to consider the former Tanzania experienced coach like Amunike. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
No matter how the ‘agent of doom’ tries to impose their non-productive ideas on Nigeria, the worst coach in Nigeria’s history on the collective will on the people of this Nation, omo9ja and cohorts shall fail in disgrace and disappointments.
Amueke is the least qualified of all the applicants looking for this job.
Failure and woke always follow Amuneke wherever he goes to manage a team of magnificence at higher level.
One of the most basic reasons why the majority of Nigerians oppose to Amuneke’s appointment is because of his inability to successfully executively managed any team at higher level to date.
Let anyone, including his ardent supporters, name any team at senior level both, internally or internationally, that he has managed successfully in his entire life. None! How can NFF therefore appoint such a failure to ‘learn on the job’. Why must any serious Organization appoint a man so ill-qualified in Nigeria and expect him to perform miracle? He has not got it, believe me.
Sir, pls answer this question, what team has Emerse Fae managed before winning the Afcon tournament. or which trophy has Aliou Cisse won before Senegal deemed it fit to appoint him as a coach. ? Amuneke is fit to handle the Eagles period, let him do it , of course if he fails he would be fired just like his predecessors. Even Berti Vogts that won Euro 96 for Germany couldn’t replicate the feat when he came to coach us, .Its not even like Amuneke is completely allergic to success as a coach , he has an u-17 world title in the bag . People might argue that it was a youth Tournament, but football rule doesn’t differ at youth tournaments. let him come and prove himself with the SE, The factors that made him fail at Tanzania, Sudan ,Egypt and Zambia might just be the inspiration he needs to succeed with the SE , just like Peseiro failed with Venezuela and succeeded with Nigeria.
What experience did Cisse have before he was hired by Senegal? What was Eguavoen CV before he coached Super Eagles? Amunike won U-17 World Cup and coached Tanzania national team. People talking about losing U-20 ticket lol. He lost the U-20 ticket due to heavy rains. That match should’ve being stopped and rescheduled but Nigerian authorities no dey ever get sense. It was similar to South Africa losing 0-2 to Rwanda in World Cup Qualifier. No way Rwanda would’ve beaten South Africa without that persistent heavy rains.
@John-1 And all you Amuneke Clamorer’s have you ever asked yourself Why Nigeria is so Successful at youth Level yet not as successful in Senior Level I mean 5 World Cup titles in under 17 and only round of 16 at senior Level. When you asnwer this question properly snd correctly you will see why You should not clamour for Indigenous Coach.
You speak of Cisse go and look at the management of his team how he acknowledges thier European stars. They are not too proud to acknowledge that their league is below Europe I mean do you think Sadio Mane would have realised his full potential or even you @John-1 would have known of him if he stayed in Senegal do you thin he would have carried his team to the AFCON title their maiden 1 for that matter?. Well in Nigeria we some how feel that we are better than European league or our players in the League are better and left to the average Indigenous coach they will axe all our European stars and be collecting money form Agents Up and Down to include their Average players from NPFL and Obscure leagues over Europe as we once Succumbed to by….. well you guessed it. and it is not like we did not pay
