Belgium: Club Brugge Boss Defends Onyedika’s Harsh Red Card

Club Brugge head coach Nicky Hayen has defended Raphael Onyedika after the player was sent off in the club’s 1-1 draw at Sporting Charleroi on Friday night.

Onyedika was dismissed 10 minutes after the break for a reckless challenge.

Hayen however said the decision by the centre referee was harsh.

“That is never a red card. Yes, he goes in hard, but not with the studs on the ankle. That was not a dangerous action and he also touches the ball. It is not that he hits him full on the ankle or the foot. I think yellow was certainly enough,” the gaffer said after the game.

Captain Hans Vanaken also jumped to the decision of Onyedika.

“That is never a red card. Yes, he goes in hard, but not with the studs on the ankle. That was not a dangerous action and he also touches the ball. It is not that he hits him full on the ankle or the foot. I think yellow was certainly enough,” Vanaken stated.

The defensive midfielder will now miss Brugge’s next three league games against Union St Gilloise, Westerloo and Anderlecht.
