Barcelona Complete Szczesny Signing As Free Agent

Barcelona have confirmed the signing of former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old recently announced his decision to come out of retirement to help the Catalan club address their goalkeeping crisis following a season-long injury to Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Szczesny mutually terminated his contract with Juventus on August 14, 2024, after five seasons with the Old Lady, and subsequently announced his retirement from professional football two weeks later. However, Barcelona have successfully convinced him to come out of retirement.

Barcelona confirmed the signing in a statement on their official website: “FC Barcelona and Wojciech Szczęsny have reached an agreement for the goalkeeper to join the Club until 30 June 2025.

“The Polish keeper comes to the Club in unusual circumstances, but there is no doubt that his CV speaks for itself.

“During his career, which appeared to have come to an end this summer, he has played at top clubs such as Arsenal, Roma, and Juventus since leaving his hometown of Warsaw at the age of 16.

“In London with Arsenal, following a loan spell at Brentford, Szczęsny established himself as the number one and won two FA Cups and a Community Shield with the Gunners.

“From the Premier League, he moved to Italy and AS Roma, consolidating his reputation as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in European football.

“From the capital, he then moved to Juventus to replace the departing legend Gianluigi Buffon between the posts.”

Szczesny has made over 500 appearances in professional football, with the majority of those coming during his time with the Old Lady.

The former Poland international won three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies, and three Italian Super Cups with the Bianconeri.
