Taiwo Awoniyi will be gunning for his fourth Bundesliga goal when Union Berlin take on host VFB Stuttgart today (Tuesday) at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
The 23-year old Liverpool loanee has scored two goals in nine appearances so far this season clocking 500 minutes in addition to his last season tally of one goal in 12 appearances clocking 478 minutes for Mainz 05.
Today’s clash will be Awoniyi’s 10th
Bundesliga appearance for Union Berlin and 22nd overall across two seasons counting from his time with Mainz 05.
Both Union Berlin and Stuttgart at tied on 17 points apiece with Berlin edging Stuttgart who thrashed Borussia Dortmund 5-1 at the weekend, to the 6th position on superior goals difference.

Awoniyi was left ruing that “sometimes you just hope for a bit of luck,” after he squandered a big chance in Union Berlin’s shock 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich.
The Nigerian had already drawn a strong save from Manuel Neuer in the first minute when, after Grischa Promel put Union ahead, he surged forward, shaking off his marker for a one-on-one with Germany’s No. 1.
Unfortunately, Awoniyi scuffed his left-footed drive just wide of the post, and later Robert Lewandowksi levelled for Bayern.
The game’s standout moment, though, was an incredible save from Union goalkeeper Andreas Luthe at the death, with the 33-year-old showing why he is still preferred to Loris Karius, who has remained unused since joining
on loan from Liverpool in September.

SCORE MORE GOALS BRO!!! THE STAGE IS SET, YOUR IN ONE OF THE BIGGEST LEAGUES IN THE WORLD. YOU NEED TO IMPROVE THIS 2 GOALS IN 9 GAMES RATIO IF YOU INTEND TO MAKE A STATEMENT FOR A CALL UP TO THE SUPER EAGLES.
This report is not a true reflection of Awoniyi’ impressive performances in the highly rated Bundesliga this season. Playing regularly and being trusted as the top 9 in a club he joined at the beginning of the season without participating in pre-season and the club is currently is a good testimony of his contributions to the team.
Although there is a need for improvement, Scoring 3 goals, some assists and winning a penalty in 12 league matches
German league is not Belgian league…
Awoniyi’s game is more suited for SE than Dessers and Onuachi..
This lad deserves to be part of the next set of invited players..
I think you got a point there @ Larry. Watched a fired up Taiwo against Bayern. I honestly love his aggression. But I still see Dessers has the veiled diamond. Quality game time with SE will prove me right.
Victor osimhen just observing… taiwo and sadiq, even that Iheanacho of a person. But of course, let’s don’t forget onuachu…
@Glory, I have no doubt about Dessers quality but I think Awoniyi is more suited to Eagles pattern of play. Perhaps, watching Awoniyi torment bayern defence and other top teams in Germany makes me believe he has improved a lot and ready for the challenges ahead. I think the SE team is blessed with prolific strikers like Osi,Awo,Sadiq,Maja, Olayinka and Desser..
I hope the nff provides better leadership and planning ahead of a more active and crucial 2021.

Rohr csnnot continue to ignore Awoniyi. The boy is working very hard despite frequent club change.
For me playing regularly in the Bundesliga this season should give Awoniyi an opportunity to stake a claim for a call up to the SuperEagles. When Awoniyi was in Belgium he scored a lot of goals. 3 goals and a couple assists so far in the season is not a bad return in a league like the Bundesliga. He was a constant nuisance to the Bayern defenders. He seems to have claimed the top striker position for Union Berlin. That’s a confidence buster for a player who looks genuinely young. After Osimhen and Iheanacho based on the pedigree of the league they’re in Awoniyi should be the next in the pecking order. All U17 WorldCup winners; Followed by the likes of Maja, Onuachu, Dessers, Sadiq and Olayinka. To be honest it will be very tough for the aforementioned names to displace any of the trio of Osimhen, Iheanacho and Awoniyi if they’re in form and shows more consistency. SuperEagles really need a striker in the mold of Awoniyi to compliment Osimhen. I don’t think Onuachu is that guy and Sadiq playing in the Spanish Segunda might not help unless he scores 20+ goals a season in that league.
@Ayphillydegreat, absolutely spot-on.
Awoniyi proves his scoring prowess in the match. He capped a strong performance with a goal today.
As said earlier, SE striking position liws on Osi and Awo..
Other top 9 like Maja, Sadiq, Olayinka and Desser can be added to the list.
Awoniyi has always had the talent of being a top striker, he belongs to the u-17 squad that had players like iheanacho, success, chidera etc unfortunately he chose a club that didn’t really have plans to develop and use him. But the good news is after a long while, he seems to have found his feet, he scored another goal again today. If he keeps this up the Super Eagles handlers will have no choice than to invite him to the team.
Like someone said Belgium league cant be compared to the German league. So whatsoever a player is doing in the Belgian league it cant compare to what another player in spain or Germany is doing. The super eagles have top strikers in all top leagues in Europe right now, so the coach should have no excuse for inviting players that cant gel with the team or cant seem to score goals for the team.
My pick for eagles striker position are as follows: Osimhen, Sadiq, Desser, Awoniyi
