According to the Sun, Arteta has been looking at potential options and may use his agency connections in order to land Stones.
Arteta shares the same agency as Stones, and is said to be hopeful of discussing a move.
The pair have worked closely together for several seasons, as Arteta featured as City assistant manager serving under Pep Guardiola.
Stones is reported to be determined to keep his game time high, in order to recapture his best form ahead of the 2020 European Championships.
A source close to the player told the Sun: “He was in London to see his agent last week and is due back again this week.
“He knows if he is to resurrect his England career he has to get more time on the pitch.
“Arteta is in need of defenders so it could be perfect for both of them.”
