Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu were in action for Southampton who fell to a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad in Saturday’s Premier League game.
Aribo was introduced into the game in the 60th minute for former Liverpool player Adam Lallana, but could not help his struggling side.
Onuachu was brought on with just three minutes of regulation time left.
A fifth minute goal by Erling Haaland secured the three points for City and top position on the log on 23 points.
After nine games, Southampton are on one point and occupy 19th position.
At Villa Park, a stoppage time goal by Bournemouth denied Aston Villa the three points as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
A win would have taken Villa to second position on 22 points in the league table.
In other results Brentford edged Ipswich 4-3, and Brighton and Hove Albion were forced to a 2-2 draw by visiting Wolves.
