Legendary Nigerian forward Daniel Amokachi says Napoli star Victor Osimhen has what it takes to surpass the achievement of late Rashidi Yekini.
Osimhen has been likened to Yekini due to his style of play and ability in front of goal.
When asked, during Thursday’s virtual press conference, if he can go on to do better than what the 1993 African Player of the Year achieved, Osimhen stated it is possible.
And Amokachi, a former teammate of Yekini has now backed the former Lille striker to go a step further.
“I think he will,” Amokachi replied during his Radio programme ‘Bull’s Pit’ on Brila FM on Friday.
“And I have said it over and over again injury-free Osimhen will, he will be one of the best ever goal scorer that ever come out of this country. What he possesses Yekini doesn’t, Osimhen is very skilful, Yekini is not skilful.
“If you combine the speed, skill and strength that he has, and he’s one player that can bully a defender for 90 minutes, then why not.”
He added:”What is lacking now is a creative player which we are still searching for. But it’s good we have (Joe) Aribo in the team, if he can stamp his authority and is given the chance to express himself, I’m sure the front players will enjoy him because he’s a very skilful player and the kind of passes he puts in is quality.”
Osimhen is expected to lead the Eagles’ attack when they host Sierra Leone today in the 2021 AFCON qualifier in Benin City.

Oshimen is going and has got something extra which I must confess is incredible. A combination of old and new strikers skills. He can utilise chances and can create chances is an amazing attribute. He’s a future African and world footballer of the year . He could surpass Yekini’s record seeing that he’s in an era where opportunities are there for him to make it count . In Yekini’s time , it took him so long and it’s due to the opportunities in his time which is not at par with the modern era . I wish Victor Oshimen well.
That Daniel Amokachi spoke well on this matter is cool. Yet again , I still recall that during USA 94, he as well as other players chose to not give Yekini the passs all because they wanted to make a name for themselves in the world . His generation were the best but failed to maintain their tempo due to jealousy. Sunday oliseh said exactly what I’m saying . And it was due to this attitude, SE couldn’t advance far beyond in that tournament . I sure hope this current team learn from this should they want to advance in the future …
Exactly, huge jealousy against Yekini, they felt he was getting more headline than them. And it was obvious. Yekini didn’t start from the golden eaglets or flying eagles. So age is still on victors side, hoping no injury. But you still miles away from the player Yekini
