Manchester City’s star forward Riyad Mahrez has made a vow to Algeria fans ahead of their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
Mahrez is currently in Cameroon preparing for Algeria’s opening group match against Sierra Leone on Tuesday, January 11.
Algeria will also be competing against Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea in Group E.
Mahrez would be looking forward to helping his country defend the AFCON title which they won in 2019.
And speaking ahead of his country’s fixture, Mahrez said on AFCON’s Twitter account @CAF_Online: “I am at the Africa Cup of Nations so I just wanted to say thank you for all the support from all over the world.
“Obviously from our Algerian people and for our country we are going to make you proud.”

Looking at his current squad’s rich depth and strength, plus the current trophy-winning momentum from the Arab Cup, you just can’t fault the man’s assertions, he can dare to believe a second time, never write them off…that’s a star-studded team man
@Ugo Iwunze— Y’know, each time I remember Onyekuru lying on the grass, shortly before Mahrez took that heartbreaking final free kick @ the Semi Final in 2019, plus the jittery Akpeyi in goal, I just giggle within me and shake my head in disappointment….well, here we are again; both men are currently in Cameroon! Déjà vu, Lol
It is well……come what may, I’d still wish them all the best, no hating 🙂
Well said mate
You must be joking @Richie @ugo tell me the stars that Algeria has that Nigeria doesn’t have . Apart from Mayrez who else . We have players in Leicester, Venezia Torino, Porto, German league Scottish league French league and yet you keep saying Algeria if that big head coach had done the necessary Nigeria should have beaten them and play at the final.
Riyad Mahrez I do not Doubt you at this tournament you are the favourites along with Senegal by a Mile..
That squad is so wealthy with so much talent bro….
How do you all know Algeria will beat Sierra leone. Right now is still 0-0 between Senegal and Zimbabwe (80 mins).
Undeserved penalty at the death…..Mané pokes it in! 1-0 FT
What a DRAB showing from the Lions of Terranga
Zimbabwe almost shock Senegal today. Senegal came to Cameroon to play big man football. They couldn’t breakdown a stubborn Zimbabwean defense in open play. Zimbabwe we’re just unlucky with that penalty. Senegal is missing some players agreed, but they look jaded. The midfield is very porous. Against a good side they may be exposed. Though it’s still early, but I don’t see them winning the cup. Did you guys notice most of Cisse’s back room staff and assistant are foreigners?? I think that’s how it should be in Africa. A local coach with ambition working in tandem with technically savvy foreign assistant.
Na wa for this Afcon ooo.
Out of 5 goals so far, 3 have come from the penalty spot.
Zimbabwe were unfortunate.
Senegal like to sit back, draw you in, and hit you on the counter. Zimbabwe were very disciplined at the back, and this made it difficult for Senegal to create chances from open play. That’s the key to beating this Senegal side. Defensive discipline. DO NOT COMMIT TOO MANY MEN FORWARD.
Zimbabwe almost got a result today by being defensively aware. Against more capable sides, Senegal will struggle, unless they raise their game.
Senegal always have to rely on their big boys in Afcon games, and that’s why their cabinet is empty. I don’t see them winning this tournament. A more discipline side will kick them out. I see this tournament been won by an all-around disciplined and more organized team. I would say Algeria but let’s see them play first. I really want to see the passion in the eyes of the super eagles tomorrow. If they play like Ghana today, we go seriously drag them. With that play play wey dem dey play for camp.
Super Eagles played ▶️ with composure, flair, passion, dedication, determination and urgency. Let’s appreciate them for putting a great shift yesterday.
One thing I know is that it will be difficult for N African to snatch the cup in west Africa
Nigeria coach got his selection right yesterday, 1st 11 on merit, no paddy paddy, no bribery. It’s been a while I had seen 1st 11 that is very competitive and dedicated like that.
