Akwa United striker, Chijioke Alaekwe, has exclusively told Completesports.com that the Promise Keepers’ 2-1 victory over Enyimba in last Sunday’s NPFL matchday 23 clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, was their “sweetest” win of the season and a “turning point” in their fight to escape the dreaded bottom rung of the standings.
Ogunleye Olayemi netted the curtain raiser for Akwa United on 26 minutes and Enyimba’s Issah Mohammed made it 1-1 on 40 minutes. Uche Sebastine netted the decisive goal with 15 minutes remaining, securing Akwa United’s first win of the second stanza of the league.

“That was our sweetest win of the campaign, especially in this second stanza,” said Alaekwe, a former FC Ifeanyi Ubah forward who also played for Kano Pillars, when Completesports.com reached him on Friday.
“Since the start of the second stanza, we hadn’t won any match. This victory against Enyimba means so much to us, considering our position on the league table.
“I’ll also say it’s a turning point for us because it has given us confidence, which will motivate us moving forward.”
For their efforts, Akwa United players were rewarded with N100,000 each by the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, through its chairman, Samuel Umoh, following their first win since the start of the second round of the 2024/2025 NPFL season.
Akwa United will travel to Sunshine Stars for their NPFL matchday 24 fixture this weekend in high spirits.
“Any team in our position now will approach every match with the mindset of picking up all three points. That’s the mentality we’re taking into the game, and we hope to get the job done in Ikenne,” Alaekwe added.
