Ben Akwuegbu says Super Eagles have convinced him, with their showing against Cameroon and South Africa, that they are strong enough to win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title in Egypt.
Akwuegbu spoke to Completesports.com from his base in the United Kingdom after the Super Eagles dispatched South Africa’s Bafana Bafana 2-1 in the quarterfinals to seal a place in the semi where they are now billed to come up against the Desert Foxes of Algeria on Sunday.
The former Nigeria striker fondly called ‘Austria Bomber’ says the Gernot Rohr’s men are good enough to bag the AFCON silverware for a fourth time.
“Against Cameroon the Eagles stepped up their game to overrun the Lions. Again, against South Africa, they demonstrated a dominant performance.
“Yes, I can conveniently say this team is good for the trophy,” the onetime Super Eagles forward said.
Algeria’s Desert Foxes pummelled Barea of Madagascar 3-0 on Thursday to set up a semifinal confrontation against the Super Eagles.
Akwuegbu is confident the Super Eagles have the quality to triumph over the north Africans.
“Super Eagles’ form is on the ascendancy. And when you have team stepping up in every match, it is difficult to stop such a team.
“Besides, Super Eagles have experienced players, so I don’t think Algeria can scratch their skin,” Akwuegbu, winner of AFCON silver and bronze in 2000 and 2002 respectively said.
