Benedict Akwuegbu has asserted that Eric Sekou Chelle’s performance will determine whether the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made the right decision in appointing him Super Eagles Head Coach, Completesports.com reports.
Chelle was unveiled today – Monday, January 13 in Abuja – following his appointment by the NFF last week.
The 47-year-old Malian replaces Finidi George as the Super Eagles’ Head Coach. He previously oversaw Mali’s 2-0 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly in Morocco in March 2024, a performance that may have strengthened his credentials for the role.

However, Completesports.com checks reveal divided opinions among Nigerian football fans. While some criticised the FA for Chelle’s appointment, others believe the Gusau-led NFF made the right decision.
Akwuegbu, a former Super Eagles striker, urged Nigerians to set aside their differing views and focus on how Chelle performs in his role.
“The ‘Austria Bomber,’” as Akwuegbu is fondly called, stated that the Malian’s performance would ultimately determine whether the NFF’s decision was justified.
“In football, you can’t predict what will happen,” Akwuegbu said from London on Monday. “As Nigerians, we need to wait and see before concluding whether the NFF made the right decision or not.
“But Nigerians should not expect instant success. We shouldn’t put him under pressure because this is a different country, with a different football culture and style of play. Nigerians love football passionately, so let’s wait and see how things unfold.”
Akwuegbu, the proprietor of Ben Akwuegbu FC in Jos, responded to claims that Chelle has taken on one of the toughest managerial roles in world football.
“I agree. Nigerians are passionate about football and expect the Super Eagles to win every match. However, football has changed—there are no longer minnows in the game. This will put enormous pressure on Chelle, especially as the Super Eagles are struggling in the World Cup qualifiers,” he said.
“The Super Eagles have not been doing well in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, especially after failing to qualify for the last World Cup in Qatar. So, the pressure will be immense, and qualifying for the World Cup will not be an easy task for him.”

The Mbaise, Imo State-born former forward was recently appointed as a Consultant on Sports to Plateau State Governor, His Excellency Caleb Muftwang, with a special focus on Plateau United. He reflected on his achievements in 2024 and outlined his primary objective in the role.
“I have established business contacts with about five clubs in Europe—Germany, Austria, England, and others—for mutual football cooperation with Plateau United,” Akwuegbu explained.
“The goal is to exchange players, ideas, and organise friendly matches with Plateau United.
“My main objective is to create opportunities for Plateau United players to play in Europe. I see a bigger picture—if they succeed in Europe, they can help their families and invest in Plateau State.”
Akwuegbu expressed optimism about Plateau United’s future despite their current struggles.
“I’m confident Plateau United will bounce back, given the good work of the General Manager and Coach Patrick Mancha, an ex-international who knows what it takes to guide the club through challenging times,” he concluded.
