The executive chairman of Akwa United Paul Bassey has told The Promise Keepers’ Brazilian coach, Rafael Everton, his assistants and and players to redouble their efforts in a bid to arrest the dwindling fortunes of the club in the current 2018/2019 NPFL, Completesports.com reports.
Elder Bassey posited that the recent harvest of woes by the club in the five week old 2018/2019 season does not in any way match the quality of the technical and playing personnel he has in the club and warned the coaches and players to start living up to their full potential.
Spokesman of the club, Mfom Patrick, said in a statement that Bassey tongue-lashed the players during the half time of their matchday-five 2-0 defeat at Nasarawa United, describing their performance as “the worst showing of an Akwa United team since he came on board three years ago”.
“He also hit out at the coaching crew after the match in Nasarawa and urged them to sit up, stressing that in four years of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration, Akwa United had become a brand and a household name not befitting the current abysmal results,” the statement reads.
“Before the start of the season, the football fraternity in Nigeria applauded the quality signings we made and the team’s preparations, only for us to disappoint our teeming fans.
“It is unbelievable to see Akwa United at the bottom of the table after four matches in this abridged version of the league.
“This is unacceptable and we cannot continue this way. Many teams have won away from home this seasoned, so what stops us from achieving that too?. You have to fight so we can get the desired result week in week out.
“You all came to this club on merit so you cannot afford to disappoint our fans and supporters, you should not let yourselves down because this is your careers.
“Whoever is selected at any given time must be ready to put in his very best. It is your duty to defend your name and your badge by playing, first and foremost, for yourselves as
professional footballers.
“You have to prove your worth on the field and move this club to where it rightly belong.
“That we have just two points from a possible 15 is disappointing and shocking. We still have 17 more matches to redeem the image of this club.
“You all have to redouble your efforts and be more business-like in approach to matches so we can achieve our aim”.

After putting so much, one would expect the team to do very well in the Nigeria league.
The can still bounce back, if only the players and coach work together to pursue a common goal. The team must win all home game and pick point away.
I love how the state government has fortified the team for the new seasons. The Brazilian coach need to understand the Nigeria league and style. He has been there before with Ifeanyi Ubah, I just wish the best.
But I stand with my club Enyimba FC.
